I picked up my 2012 wide glide today after having the SE255 cams installed and the bike dyno tuned. under any more than minimal throttle, there is a rattle noise from what sounds like the top end that sounds like someone shaking a pop can full of bb's. The bike has done this when hot since new only it was faint and for very short periods. Now it is in every gear and from probably 2500-5000 rpms and it it sounds like someone added more bb's to the can and shook it violently. It was about 85 degrees today btw. I called the dealer and they asked me immediately if I had the lifters replaced with the cams. I said no, I asked what else I needed prior to install and was told nothing...lifters were never mentioned. He said I should have done lifters. I called all the other dealers in the state and they all said lifters should have been replaced with the cams! I have 2900 miles. Please help.....I am bringing the bike back in tomorrow to be checked. Should the lifters have been replaced with my cams? Should I have them replaced now? I have a feeling the dealer will try to hit me for labor now and assume all the gaskets would have to be replaced again as well at a cost.......any advice here? Thanks everyone!
Did my cams this spring. Re-used the lifters. 20,000 miles. Were adjustable pushrods installed? They may need to be readjusted. Bigger cams will move things more, leading to more noise. This may be as simple as that noise you heard before just being amplified by the bigger cams.
i know after i did my big bore with the 255 cams i hear more noise coming from the rocker arms i figure this is normal because the rockers are moving more now
At 2900 miles your lifters are still new, I wouldn't of replaced them either. U need to adjust or check your push rods. It could be pinging from being to lean and I'd suggest getting the bike to a dyno tuner
I do hope your not expecting the same level of engine noise that you used to have though. generally speaking if you put in lumpy cams your certainly going to notice an increase in the 'tap - tap' noise.
Got it out this morning. 70 degrees, all was quiet for about 15 minutes, then as the engine got hot, the noise slowly came back. Happens only when rolling on the throttle and continues until throttle is closed....not a steady or rythmic sound. I assume this is ping at this point?
