99 FXDWG Speedo/ODO problem
Lets describe whats taken place the last few months.
Me and the lady took a trip up to Pine Mountain. During that trip, my engine light would randomly come on, and the speedo would just drop, or freeze on whatever speed I was going. The odometer also went out at this time. I noticed that when I hit a blinker, horn, etc the needle would jump and the miles on the odo would flash just for a second.
I read to clean the speedo sensor and I did that, with no help.
Well on the way home from that trip the battery seemed to be getting weak. Then died. I mean totally dead. Come to find out my voltage regulator was fried and was putting out 14v at idle, 18+ upon revving. So I knew the battery had been overcharged and died. No biggie.
I replaced the regulator and battery this past Friday. Everything works fine except the speedo/odo. The backlight works, but it will show NO speed or miles on the odo.
Usually when turning the key to RUN, the speedo would make that funky sound, and the needle would jump, etc like it always has. Guess it was performing some kind of test. Anyhow, now it does nothing. At all. Does not move at all. I've tried testing everything I know to test, and have called the mechanic that helps me out when I need it and tried his suggestions. Checked fuses, etc. Everything tests fine. The thing just will not work.
Did it get fried when the voltage regulator was overcharging? If not, is there a way to reset the thing? Like a safety switch, etc that I just can't find?
When it overcharged BAD on the way home from the trip it managed to blow the brake, front turn, and headlamp bulbs so I know it had a huge spike in power.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance
it turned out to be a loose battery cable. That was weird because I had tightened them both about a month earlier
that is about all I can help you with but it probably isn't your problem
Sorry
