Default help with shifter arm replacement '03 FXDP

I am new to the DIY on my bike. The aluminum shifter arm that attaches to the shaft coming out of the trans needs replacing. It appears I must remove the primary cover to even get near it. Are there any special tools I will need to pull gears or anything else?

It appears I have to remove the floorboard, heel/toe shifter, outer cover, both sprockets and chain, and then the inner cover just to remove the arm.

sounds about right. it only takes an experienced Harley tek one hour to remove those parts and slap em back together. most important tool I think is a bar that locks the clutch basket against the front sprocket and once the bolt is loose the basket comes right out. It may sound easy put that way, but I know it take me way more time than that.

There is after market arm that replaces the stock one. It clamps on with 2 or 4. You don't have to remove the. primary to install it. The old one is cut off with dremel tool. When I remember the mfg. I'll post it

Yep, you're right. I have an '04 FXDP that I recently replaced the shifter shaft seal on, and the floorboards, outer primary cover, comp sprocket, clutch basket & chain, front drive pulley, and inner primary case all have to come off to get to the shifter arm attached to the extention. Also, the two bolts that attach the starter to the inner primary case must be removed. It's a pretty big job unless you're an experienced tech.

You do need some unusual tools including a big socket for comp sprocket nut (can't recall size, 1 1/2" maybe?) and it is rt-hand treaded, big socket for the clutch basket nut (I used 30mm) and it is lt-hand thread, and something to lock the comp sprocket/clutch basket sos you can get them off. I fabbed up a tool from 1/4" steel bar that is 10.5" long, 2" wide, with a 1.75" slot cut out of one end to make clearance for clutch basket starter gear.

Don't know how many miles are on your bike, but since you are inside anyway, might consider replacing the inner primary seal, shifter seal, 5th gear seal, & quad seal. It's a big pain going in when they leak, as mine did (inner primary bearing race walked dumping entire primary lube load in about 5 miles).

Good luck. You really need a HD service manual. And the torque spec for the clutch basket nut in the manual is no longer correct. New torque procedure issued later in serv bulletin.

Thanks to everyone who posted. I took the heel/toe shifter, floorboard and outer cover off. I found Jack Schitt's asian cousin Ho Lee Schitt inside the primary cover. Then I checked this forum thread. Thanks to DanDMan and Uncle Larry for the link. I think that is how I am going to finish this job. Ah well, the chain needed adjusting and the fluid needed replacing anyway. I don't have specialty tools, but I do have the shop manual. ride safe and thank you all!

...and then I saw the price. The replacement part from Drag Specialties is $30 conpared to $200. I guess I get to learn how to disassemble and reassemble my primary. I have 35k miles on it so replacing the seals is probably not a bad idea.
