I need some sage advice from some veteran HD'ers. Here's the deal
I'm 48 (soon to be 49), have owned a bunch of BMW's, Nortons, and sundry rice burners. I have decided that I NEED a Harley to have lived a full life. So I'm looking at touring models and Dynas and trying to decide the best fit for myself. I like somewhat the idea of a bagger, just not the 800 or so pounds of chrome and steel involved. I have test ridden a Dyna and a Road King Custom. Most of my riding will be 1 up, with the occaisional 2-up with daughter or wife.
My impression was that the 07 Dyna was pretty snappy and the RK was like driving a sofa down the road. Neither had a fairing or windshield, so that somewhat detracted from the overall experience. Also, it was about 30 degrees. After having ridden with fairing or windshield on my last few bikes, I am pretty certain that I'll be needing same for anything I might buy.
Check out the February 2007 edition of American Rider. There's an article in there about a convertible Dyna Superglide. That will take care of the bags, sissy bar, and windshield but you will still have the issue of no fairing.
go check out the EG Standard, the FLHT model, seems to me that will work the best for you,..The EGS comes with the batwing fairing, and you can get severl windshilds of different heights for it, also standard on them is a set of bags, good comfy seat fot thousands of miles on it..I now have 141,000 on mine. they also comee in different colors now, lucky for me when I bought mine it only came in black, which I happen to like.
Rent some more and try more models. Try to get a feel for the one that matches your riding style the best. You will get a ton of folks telling you that whatever they have the best, but only you can decide what is best for you.
Think bout your past bikes and what you liked an disliked. See what models have the qualities you like.
Dyna should fit you just fine.I've put almost fifteen thousand miles on mine since the first part of March.BUT,I sure like the looks of a soft-tail deluxe, and I've never even sat on one.
I'm 47 and I ride a Dyna Wide Glide. Since you seem torn between the sportiness of a Dyna and the practicality of a Touring bike, I suggest that you look closely at the Street Glide. It's got the most attitude of any full-on HD bagger (stance and looks) and comes with a nice little fairing, too. That'll probably be my next bike.
