So, I've decided my next power adder will be cams, seems to be the best choice for a soild non-bigbore power upgrade. I have a few questions entailing that... Are there pros and cons with low/mid cams and mid/high cams? What do I need to do to the motor to beef it up to withstand the added power IF anything at all(Pushrods, cam timing gears, etc?)? Is there any brand better out there than another? I kind of had my heart set on S&S, was browsing JP cycles and then realized that I have NNOOOOOOOOOOOO earthly idea what I'm reading, the information is just jibberish to me, I'm not very mechanically inclined, I mean, I can do routine maintenance, oil changes and such and understand HOW the motor works and am still learning but I'm certainly NO mechanic and alot of this information may as well be ancient Egyptian. Also, to throw in the fray, shaved heads, would anyone recommend that I go to a machine shop to shave the factory heads or get an After-Market set? Any info would be very much appreciated...
Information on your riding style and what RPM range you would like to improve would also be good. I don't really wind my bike out too much, so a cam with the power band in the higher rpms would not really benefit me. You need to think about that sort of thing to decide what would best fit your style.
I live in TN so I have lots'o' twisties, so I suppose a lower RPM cam that will allow me to rocket away from a corner. I do alot of in city riding but that's where about 1/6 MAYBE 1/5 of my miles come from, the only reason I guess having a higher rpm cam would be for interstate riding and I do that once every never.
Andrews TW48H is a very good low end cam. I have them and love them. Look at the dyno chart on Andrews web site and you will see that the TQ comes on quick and stays. Riding in the mountians is fun now because I am not shifting all the time.
I used 26h based on a recomendation from a local Indy shop owner...it was between this and the SE 255...
The 26h says it's good for 1800-5200 rpm... If it makes my touting bike rock, imagine what it will do to a Dyna....bolt in cams...Only mod i made was SE adjustable pushrods because i didn't wanna go through the top...quiet my top end too...
