Ok I am getting tired of this tuning game, upgrade cams, bike doesn't run as expected, might do a big bore kit in the winter, some head jobs and bigger valves next year. I really want to take advantage of the Tmax autotune, does it mean I don't ever need a dyno tune? Tmax users, please tell me how your bike perform without a dyno tune, like to know your experience. I am not looking for a perfect tune like real world dyno, at least something close enough, fit my budget for now instead of spending $$$$ of tuning labor. Thanks a lot! Alex
No. You don't need a dyno tube with auto tune installed. I've got 2 friends running the t-max and auto tune module. Their bikes are highly modified. Their only complains are fuel economy since the auto tune will run within it's programmed parameters and in these cases they are still running the break in tune. They have to change their a/f ratios in closed look to help the mileage but the bikes run very well.
I have had my T max for 3 years now. Just upgraded my cams this season. Loaded a new map and just road my bike and let it tune it self. Bike runs great.
Like some of the other tuners (SEPST, PowerVision), if there is a canned map available that matches your hardware then you are good to go. It then has the advantage over the other tuners that it will tweak the VE tables to adjust for variations with your bike and local conditions, saving having to do manual smartuning.
However, it there is no map that matches your hardware then you can try the closest one and hope the unit can adjust enough to make it good. However, its then never going to be the greatest tune, especially if its the cams that are mismatched. You'll need a dyno then to get it really good.
Mine runs better than anything else I have ever had. I had issues at first with cold start popping in the intake, and fuel mileage sucked, but I talked to ThunderMax support and they fixed me up. I had to run a monitor dialog of my tune with the bike running until operating temp, then emailed it to ThunderMax, they modified my tune and I reloaded it, now it is totally perfect! I get around 42 mpg on the highway now too. It runs very well. I'd buy one again for sure.
Dyna will more fine tune the tmax but no it is not a must. Took a bit for met to find the map the works best but I have not got a dyna tune and it runs great. Love it!

Guys at tmax are great! Very nice and helpful every time.
To make it perfect, yes a Dyno tune would help. But the Thundermax will get it 95% there on its own (or maybe with some MAP help from them). The average person will be happy without a tune. Its a great product.
