Default Clutch adjustment

Last time I adjusted my clutch at about 900 miles I think I adjusted it too tight or loose because ever since its been clunking harder when I shift gears than before I adjusted it.

My thinking is it too loose and not disengaging fully when the clutch is pulled in?

I know Harley's clunk, period. But its clunking harder than it did when I first got it...does this sound right or am I bassackwards?
Thanks in advance

When you adjusted the clutch, did you loosen the cable adjuster first then adjusted the clutch under the derby cover then back to the cable .

Cable should have about 1/8 play at the handle.

Not a big job , i would try readjusting again and see how it works.

Yea last time I did it step by step according to service manual....I just adjusted it again and I was right, the adjusting screw under the derby was too loose. I gotta go get a new torx bit before I button it back up. I lost the correct one and messed up the next size smaller I had...

Kinda off base here but I changed the clutch and brake levers and ever since then I can't start it in gear anymore, the little tang thing on the clutch lever isn't big enuff to activate the button.

AKBobber707, I mistakenly bought a lever that did not having the nub to engage the button. In that spot I drilled a hole, tap it, and put a metal clip in with some red locktite so it would push in the button. You'll have to MacGuyver something up like I did. Mines isn't the most beautiful thing in the world but no one knows it's there but me and it works perfect.

Guenther, That's pretty much was what I had in mind also. Thanks for the input.

Dude all I'm gonna say about that is you should never start your bike in gear. Promotes wear and tear on your starter system, not to mention if you ever forget and just let go the handle after it is started

Also my clunk can be more pronounced depending on how I release the lever. Sometimes I just drop it and roll on the htrottle and it gives me aloud clunk, or release nice and slow -normal- and can't hear a sound, try that before you go nutz adjusting and re-adjusting your clutchpak.

I adjust the clutch screw 1/2 turn out, it's enough. The cable can be 1/8 " loose or all the loose out as long as it's not pulling the clutchpak- which it won't because your clutch lever is only active for about a half inch.

Yeah always let the bike cool down to room temp before you attempt a clutch adjustment. 1/2 turn counter clockwise in the clutch pack for the free play and 1/16 to 1/8 inch free play between the cable ferrell and the clutch perch will get you where you want to be. Like Maddghost said never start it with it in gear, too much stress on the starter. If its the first gear clunk you are trying to avoid, do what I do. After you start her up and the fast idle is up there around 1700 rpm's slip her in gear then, no first gear clunk.
