Bad things happen. You did some things right to minimize any possible issues. You had some gear on you and a gaurd on the bike. Live and learn. Glad to hear you are fine.
Glad you and the wife are ok, I could add an opinion also, but we all know the story on opinions. Life is about learning, just glad this lesson wasn't too costly.
Get the recall work done. I got my lowrider in 08 and it never leaked a drop of gas until about 6 months ago, it got progressively worse until I could only fill my tank halfway to keep gas from spilling while turning or accelerating.
It literally takes them 10 minutes to adjust the filler neck. I took my bike in, bought a oil filter, checked out the bikes on the floor, by that time my bike had already been brought back out.
Hasn't leaked a drop since.
But if yours leaked when it was down I would bet its going to slowly get worse until the gas cap starts clicking way before it seals.

You are probably correct. Next time I take it in for service or just out for a ride I'll take her in. There was one post that said they cut some new deeper threads and that left some bare metal. Did you notice that? A little leary on them maybe creating a rust problem later on and having to replace the tank. I know that would take a long time but I do plan on keeping it a long time.
BTW I have decided after reading some of these posts to stay away from group rides or at least be at the far rear of the group.
