As been stated, there are good unions and bad, good companies and bad. The problem comes from both non union and union people. They are fighting each other. The Union workers hate scabs, the non union workers, and the non union workers hate union workers. I don't think there are as many good unions as there once was. I don't think there is a need for as many as there once was. I think non union workers can and do as good of work as union workers.
My father was union, and after I got out of the service, I was union until I changed jobs. I have had no issues with being cheated by the company I work for now, actually the company has been sold a few times and each time they have kept our benefits except having to co pay for insurance which at one time they paid it all, but that is the norm these days. I have seen shabby work from both union and non union workers. It all depends on how you feel and want to live with. While at my last job I got the run around from my business rep when trying to get promoted until I went directly to the GM and got the promotion myself. That's just my experience. I'll go with what ever the company has that I want to work for, either union or non union and then if I don't like what is going on I'll look elsewhere.
There is no such thing as a scab...just somebody who wants to work at least as much or more than some union worker and sees no reason to support the efforts of either the union or it's members. A pejorative term had to be invented by strikers to apply to those who threaten their objectives.
All I have to say is that the union i'm in is not some kind of "rape the company" union. But everyone union/non-union wants a fair share and enough to achieve that American dream.
Too many companies don't give a rats a?? about people just profits. Anyway my company doesn't put away pension money anymore for new hires. They must put their money into a 401k. Since I started working in a union in 1981 I have the advantage of having a pension and my 401k so I'll be comfy when I retire.
And to address what someone said that unions protect lazy workers, let me just say that in the few companies I worked at there are many lazy bosses also.
And am I suppose to work my fingers to the bones while the boss decides to leave early and go play golf? There's the weekend that he can go play. (sarcasm)
In the future there will be no union jobs and the lazy will get fired, go on welfare, unemployment and make all of us pay for it like we do now.
Maybe the next ceo of HomeDepot will get $1B when he/she leaves.
I feel bad for all the young kids these days, they'll have to save like made, maybe work 2 jobs to make that dream come true. And then they'll have to 100 years old to collect social security if it isn't used up by the illegals.
I tell all the younger folk to be either a cop, fireman or politicain, they all seem to work 2 jobs and we'll \always need them.
The only reason i got a harley is because of my job as a union Bricklayer. BAC Local 9 PA GO UNION. Anyone that talks Sh*t on a union just dosn't understand that there is a better way of life for everyone. Yah there is corruption every where but if it wasn't for our officers the contractors wouldn't give us a cent! Im 22 years old 4th generation Bricklayer my family has been pay dues since the 20s.

There are some valid points on both sides. But I have a simple point about this thread. What the heck is this thread doing in the dyna section? Wouldn't it fit much nicer in the general harley chat forum?
