Had a strange occurrence while riding today: I had ridden about a mile or so and stopped for a red light. Started off and got into 3rd. About 45 mph and my engine shut down with no wearing lights. Couldn't check for any codes, as I was trying to get off the hwy. when I got stopped, I saw the message V INERR. Tried to restart engine with no luck. Thumbed thru the screens on the odometer using the trip meter/horn button. Engine cranked and ran long enough to get saddled back up, then quit again. Wouldn't crank again. Tried cycling the trip meter again, after seeing the same V INERR Msg. Cranked up again, but this time, continued to run till I got home, about 15 miles. Re-cranked several times with no repeats of the problem. Bike has 4K trouble-free miles on it.
I've read all the other threads in the forum regarding this error msg., but no one seems to have had an engine stall. Any ideas out there. my local dealer is closed till after the new year, so I can't call them till then. Very perplexing!
My 12 fxdc had same problem as yours, v inerr, engine dying, all kinds of electrical wonk. dealer spent 2-3weeks trying to figure out what was wrong, ended up replacing the entire wiring harness, and its run perfect ever since. HD is apparently seeing this problem more&more with the new bikes. good luck to ya
Thanks for the reply. I've not had another occurrence since that one time. Hoping not to have another, but it make me nervous about taking any long rides, for sure!
Sorry to resurect this thread but this exact issue is now happening to my 2012 FLD. engine cuts out , cannot restart easily. Sometimes it will start, most times it will not. waiting or boosting is only marginally successful.
Same error code on display V-INERR while cranking.
Bike has been at the shop for week, they ae stumped as well.
Did you require entire harness as Will51 did?
been discussed on this forum tons of times, seems to happen on all 2012 dynas. my fxdb started doing it on hart starts V INNER. most dealers have no idea what it is, some claim it is from a BCM (body control module)
here is the crazy part, mine did it up until the 20,000 mile mark then i had a stage 4 kit installed, and it didnt do it ever again i rode it for another 13,000 miles and it never happened....then the bike got totaled at 33,000 miles . i have no idea why it quit displaying VINNER after the stage 4 kit.

Hi. Regarding the error message, my FLD never repeated the problem after that day. Rode it on several multi-hundred mile trips as well as just around locally. Put another few thousand miles on it with no troubles. Traded it about 7 weeks ago for a '13 Road King Classic. Already put a couple of thousand miles on it. Just sayin,..... it handles like a dream vs. the FLD, which wasn't bad....but if you get a demo day at your dealer, take a touring bike for a spin. I've always rode lighter bikes, but I really like this RKC! Best of luck to you!
This has happened on my 09 FXD with the 4" speedo/tach. It is a low voltage thing the causes the ECM to not recognize the speedo. Read it was happening on touring bikes and bikes with the new CAN BUS systems. In the touring section one member said to disconnect and reconnect the battery, this clears and sets the system. It worked on my FXD, have not had a problem for quite awhile now.

I've encountered this problem and dealt with it for a long time on my '13 Super Glide Custom. I have around 18.5k miles and just recently I've also had problems with high idling on hot start ups. Last weekend I was on a ride and my engine died on the highway. After removing the battery cover I found the negative battery terminal was melted. My girlfriend and I were wearing heated gear and I thought maybe we were overloading the battery. Then someone at Harley told me a loose battery connection can cause excessive heat and that can happen. I was also told that would explain my engine issues that day.
I put the bike on a tender and found it was running perfectly for the next three days. No engine malfunction, and no V INERR on start up. On day three it was left off a tender and all the symptoms returned, minus the engine failure. I concluded it was a battery issue and bought a new battery. I also read several threads about the V INERR code and saw that many people think it is associated with a bad battery cell, or poor connection somewhere. It's been a few days and so far there has been normal engine performance and no V INERR error. I'm not sure if the new battery took care of everything or not, but so far so good.
I took my battery in to Advanced Auto to have it tested, not exactly sure what I was going to find or even looking for.
Voltage - 12.09
346 CCA
Rated for 300 CCA
Does this sound right? I had/have the VINNER issue and trying to take care of it this winter. I already inspected and tightened down the negative connections on the frame.
