Default V INERR Error Code on Start-up

I have been getting this error occasionally after a long ride when I try to restart my bike. I press the starter, it will crank a little and then kick back. After the kickback, I get the V INERR code? on my speedo. Most of the time, if I press the starter again, it just starts right up with no issue. On rarer occasions, it will start but the RPMs with be way up. If I shut the bike down and restart, all goes back to normal...I had the dealer load test my battery and it checked out ok. I have checked all the grounds/cables and they are good. Any ideas????

It is a low voltage thing. Sometimes on hard starts the voltage from the speedo is to low for the ecm (on newer bikes, the CAN BUS) recognize the speedo which causes that error. And on my bike it does not throw any codes.
I have had the disconnect and reconnect my battery to clear the error. I got that cure from the Touring area.

I wonder if there is a bad cell in the battery. I had it load tested and it was ok but...

I've had the same issue since day one on mine. Someone else on the forum posted that it was caused by a rusted out ground connection under the seat. I plan on taking a look my self to eliminate that possibility. However, I'm curious as to what the disconnect and reconnect trick is. I'v disconnected my battery several times and I still have the same issue!

On older bike, before 2012 and the CAN BUS system, disconnecting and reconnecting the battery resets ECM and clears this error. I have read that the new CAN BUS system is real sensitive to low voltages.

Thank you Rick. My fxdb is a 2012 so that would explain why it wouldn't work. By the way

The kick back is probably caused by the compensator kicking out.
This is why so many go to the SE compensator.
My 07 Ultra was bad about it and finally it went south so I went to the SE version and it stopped.
The higher RPM om start up could be that the ecm is thinking it shut down at a higher rpm.
My Street Glide will do it if I don't let it idle down before turning it off.
just a thought

All it is is a low voltage thing. Get a battery tender or ride it more.

I just posted this same issue...funnynenough scrolled down and saw this...i have a 12 fxdc and have the exact same problem....i ride it often so i dont thinl that is the problem....it started happening after about 3500 miles...didnt really think anything of it but almost seems like its happening more often and the last time it happened it sounded like the bike was idling at a higher rpm....my bike is still under warranty so maybe i should just bring it in....but any help would be great thanks

I had that code happen to me in Sturgis this year. I had a gps turned on and was at slow speeds for quiet a while. we stopped to eat, when restarting bike that code appeared on cluster. ended up pulling main fuse for a few mins and reinstalled fuse started bike back to normal operation . the voltage drop on the battery was detected by ecm, than setting the code. this has never happen under normal riding conditions. Only once with the gps plugged in.
