Take the battery cover off.. clear the codes.. i had the same deal. It was my battery cover. It was too close to the terminals causing errors. I lined the inside with some electrical tape and that fixed the problem.
It's something about the new battery cover shape that after a while, it just does this. I have no idea why.
Bringing this thread back up since it may be helpful for those starting their bikes up after having them winterized.
I had the same problem, hard start, same error code.
I am confident the reason we get this code is because of a poor battery connection. My battery terminals were loose after having the bike winterized and I forgot to tighten back the screws to the terminals as I took off my battery tender off. I rode the bike a few times before I figured out the root issue
Instant results, but starts up again no problems! Once I got a clean connection back onto the battery, the problem was gone. Check your terminals to ensure they are tight and also clean without any obstructions or corrosion. I suspect a low battery will also produce the same code.
I have a 2015 Street Bob that's under 5000 kms and I got this error a month ago with an engine shut down in the middle of my trip.
Dealer thought they solved the issue three times and after each time I picked up the bike from the dealer the engine kept shutting down.
Finally they said the issue was a ABS connection and we disconnected the ABS which seemed to solve the issue for a while. After a mont my bike shut down again showing the same VINNER code. It's not even starting this time so looks like a separate issue.
It's been 2 days the dealer is working on it but no news yet.
It's a new bike and I am pretty upset having this many issues and engine shutdowns already.
At this point I don't even trust my bike anymore and I have a feeling after picking up my bike from the dealer I will just keep getting this error again ruining my trips..
I just posted this same issue...funnynenough scrolled down and saw this...i have a 12 fxdc and have the exact same problem....i ride it often so i dont thinl that is the problem....it started happening after about 3500 miles...didnt really think anything of it but almost seems like its happening more often and the last time it happened it sounded like the bike was idling at a higher rpm....my bike is still under warranty so maybe i should just bring it in....but any help would be great thanks
did you figure out what was going on? I have the exact same issue.
Mine did this several times during the first 15 months I had my '14 Street Bob. I replaced the OEM battery with a Yuasa, and haven't had a problem since. Almost 3 years now.
i have read this thread and others, seems to be a low voltage problem so im reading.. some say to fix it disconnect and clean battery terminals, some say use a battery tender, some say to replace the battery...cant do the battery tender fix because of where i park it., would buying a new battery fix this problem??should i have a the battery tested?? would that show me anything, bad battery, low battery etc??. i have a 2014 streetbob. the problem started about a month ago and just would happen at the 1st start up of the day, now it happens 2-3x a day while im out riding. any and all info would be appreciated. thank you
I have a 2014 Street Bob as well, and I've been having the same VINERR code accompanied by rough startup. I wouldn't mind finding out if the root cause of the issue is a bad battery?
Hi all, recently bought a 2019 Heritage, its got 150km on it and last weekend was having a quiet ride and the engine lights came on and the bike cut out, started up again almost immediately but within a few km's did the same thing a couple of times until it cut out completely, stuck on the side of the road it wouldn't even turn over. Called HD who collected the bike and since then have been checking/testing and all they can find is a software upgrade is required. My concern is what's to say this doesn't happen again!!
I have a 2012 slim which has not given 1 second of trouble. As someone else posted I don't have much confidence in this bike unless a definitive answer can be given.
Every time I have had this happen was when the engine was hot and I went to restart after I either stopped at a gas station or other place for a short period of time. Never had it happen when the motor has cooled down after a long rest. I love that stupid high idle that comes with this condition.
