I am thinking of putting a pair of stock length 412's on my 05 FXD with 22k miles. Are they that much better than stock shocks? Should I go the more expensive shocks? Any feedback is appreciated.
When it comes to suspension you have to ask yourself just how much better you want it and what you are willing to spend. You will get hundreds of opinions but it is your bike and your money.
Some are happy with the 412's and most are reporting they are barely better then stock.
I went with the ricors and am very happy with them....there are better and worse options....and you can spend less and you can spend more...
The best reviews I've seen include works black trackers, ricors, JRI, and Ohlins. Priced from $600-$1500
I briefly used the standard 412s on my FB - they offered a tad better control than the stockers but I found that they were much to stiff for my comfort, even at the lowest pre-load setting. Back to using OEM for now, but am considering the Prog 970s for the future.

I've got 12" 412's with the HD springs. I'd say they're maybe a little better than stock, but I think that's mostly because of the heavier spring it doesn't bottom as much when riding 2 up. If I was to do it again I'd spend a little more money (or a lot more money) and get something noticeably better than stock.
