Primary tower gasket leaking
I have an '07 FXDC with mid controls, and the tower gasket was leaking (noticed shortly after taking delivery).
Just replaced the gasket this past Saturday night - cleaned the tower surfaces well and adhered the gasket to the inner primary tower, being careful not to damage it as I slid it over the shifter shaft. The gasket seemed to be well adhered to the tower.
Carefully replaced the outer cover, following the proper torque sequence and bringing to 108 inch pounds. Replaced the shifter and foot peg and filled with fluid.
Took for a ride the next day, and there is still oil coming out, although more slowly than before. Not sure if perhaps it is residual oil that remained in the tower from before? Maybe the gasket will swell a bit in time and it will stop? Wishing it could be so, but I fear that is not the case.
If this continues to leak, I will take another swing at it. Would appreciate any advice anyone may have to ensure that this frickin' gasket actually does the job it is supposed to.
Before you suggest it, I really have no interest in forward controls, so not a solution for me.
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
My next attempt will be using a Genuine James gasket with just a bit of Yamabond on the mating tower surfaces in hopes that it will keep the gasket in place and leak tight.
I should mention that the replacement that I had just installed a couple of weeks ago was still properly positioned/adhered and appeared to be in good shape. It was squished pretty flat, though.
Also used Spectro primary fluid when refilling, replacing the Syn3 that I had put in there - had great results with Spectro products in past history WRT shifting and clutch performance.
Took it for a spin tonight and all is well so far, but not enough riding to expose the leak if it is still going to happen. Shifting is indeed a bit quieter and clutch engagement a bit smoother with the Spectro.
I'll report back after a couple of commutes and let you know what's up with the leak.
