Hello I have a 2003 fxdwg and my oil level cold has always been in the middle of the stick and when hot it would show full this is doing it by the book on the jiffy stand and when hot letting it idle few min. Well now when cold cold on jiffy stand in the middle but when hot shows a quarter down fron full any help Thanks ps bought it little over a year ago with 1600 miles now have 8000
I'd let it go, that is the way these bikes are. That many miles with only that much usage I would say is good. You certainly do not want to overfill these engines or you will have unwanted consequences.

If you're going by the book and checking the oil when it's hot... And you're doing everything else right and your dip stick is accruate and properly installed......
And the dipstick is showing it's low -- It's low.
The HD Motor is a pretty big motor to only have three quarts of oil in it. Especially when you consider it's air-cooled. You don't want it to be too low for any length of time.
As to over-filling it? Not good but not fatal unless you overfill it by a lot. And remember, it's easier to add oil than it is to remove it.
It's still a dry sump system. But don't overfill it. Right on the money is always best
Maybe you checked it hot after a few minutes of idling, and either didn't wait for the oil to drip down, or you inadvertently forgot to screw the dipstic down snug before unscrewing it again to check your level. If it's showing half full cold there is no way other way it will show low when hot unless a bunch leaked out without your knowledge,
one way or the other your supposed to check it cold. If it's half or more your good.
