I wanted to keep my sportster when I got my dyna but I ended up trading the sporster in for the dyna. Kinda kick myself cuz now the wife wants to get her mc license now
My daughter wanted to ride my 883 after taking the safety course and getting her license. She did, once, and it was a real frustrating experience for her, and cost the sporty a couple turn signals. Then she went along with what I wanted to do in the first place, got her an old 225cc trail bike to build her skill and confidence. When she can cut doughnuts, powerslide, handle 8 foot jumps and wheelie, I'll let her on the Harley again. I might accept a 4 foot jump, Minnysota is kinda flat.

My 1200 always gets better mileage than my 883, 50+ versus seldom over 45 on highways, and I have a tendency to go 10-20mph faster on the 1200... See above about my feelings on a sporty as starter - those little Hondas are fine, but a trail bike (enduro-on/off road) is even lighter and better handling.

I ain't prejudiced and it is definitely nice having a backup.
I just bought a Dyna Low Rider, an upgrade from my sporty custom and decided to keep the sporty. I enjoy both bikes for what they are, the sporty is very nimble but the Dyna is close but much more comfortable for the longer rides.
I have a Fat Bob now and my wife just bought an 883XL... I have ridden her bike a few times and its just a fun little bike. I can whip it around, all but pick it up, and just generally get myself in trouble.
I will most likely be buying myself either an 883 or a 1200 just for tooling around on the city streets in the near future.
I will keep the Dyna for my regular riding but customize the Sporty myself and let it take me as long as I want/need.
I traded my Sportster in on a brand new SuperGlide and was in hog heaven. About a year later I picked up a nice V-Star as an impulse buy, figured it'd be nice to have a backup scoot, then a few months later I ran across a killer deal on another Sportster I could not pass up.
Love all three. Ride them about equally, but to be honest the SuperGlide is my favorite bike of all time. Just awesome.
Same reason that when I had Corvettes and a Viper I had a Miata MX-5. It was more fun to ram around in. With the Viper by the time you hit third gear you were in jailable offense territory.
No stock Dyna or Softail can hold a candle in acceleration, braking and overall handing like the Sportster XR1200. Or match its 125 mph top speed.
If bigger was better we all would be riding Boss Hoss's.
I have three Softails. A Deuce, a FXSTC and a Deluxe. In Dyna's I have a Superglide, Street Bob and Lowrider. In Sportsters I have the XR1200, XL1200T and a 883R. Worst handling bike and most uncomfortable is the Superglide. The best handling and comfortable ride is the FXSTC. The fastest is the Street Bob but then it has the 120R. It is good for straight line running only. Usually in 1/4 mile shots.
None of my collection of Touring bikes and CVO Touring bikes are as comfortable and track as well as the FXSTC either. HD Touring and Dynas with the swing arm bolted to a rubber mounted engine just is not the way to make a great handling bike. There is a built in potential for weave and high speed wobble. It also yields a more vague tracking response.
Kept my last three and regret everyone I have ever sold. I'm a hoarder I guess. started riding sportbikes and still have the last one. ZX10R (And no there isn't a Sportster on earth touching a common sportbike its insane. Bought a sportster 883C last year as a cheap way of seeing if I could make the transition to Harley (Cruisers). Then I got a steal on my Super Glide a few months ago. Sportster gets the most miles for sure. Its my commuter bike. Comfortable for my 20 mile commute but a boat load of fun. Ill probably breakdown and sell the ninja but not the sportster.

yeah, well fun-shun, a corvette or viper is better than a Miata in every way too,.. take the xr1200 off the table, a modified dyna can do everything a 1200 sportster can and probably more.. much bigger motor, runs smoother & an extra gear...
damn I want a Vrod for a 2nd bike, I should go test ride one.. can't afford it yet though.

I am getting a Low Rider and will still have my vintage 1970 Sportster, does that count? In all seriousness if I didn't live in NYC and park in the street I would keep my daily rider 2013 72 and have my new Dyna no problem. They are still different enough to justify it.

We have 5 cars and 2 bikes... and its just me and my wife... so maybe I am a hoarder too...
We have an 08 Charger R/T heavily customized for SEMA... a 10 Challenger R/T (wifes)... 15 Kia Optima for when the weather doesnt cooperate... 95 K1500 Suburban for when I need to let my inner redneck come out and play and my wifes 94 C1500 - her first "new" car so she is attached to it.
Then the 2 bikes (soon to be 3 bikes)
And we live in a house that looks like a strong wind could knock it down... go figure.
Each vehicle we have serves a purpose (at least in our minds) and each one is a VERY different driving experience.
