I want to add a detachable sissy bar to my bike but Im having a hard time figuring out which one I want.
If I go with the all in one "tall" from HD it seems like it might be a little high. Its cheaper though than going the route of picking the different pieces.
I would like to see if anyone has done that also and put the medium or low sissy bar on the bike.
The thing is I love my drag bars and wont be changing them. Sissy bars look best with apes, I get it, but I am looking for some practicality too when putting someone on the back or to put a quick trip bag on.
So yeah, lets see em.
PS-I did a google search and there doesnt seem to be many FatBobs out there with them. Lots of Sportsters and Fatboys though.
I have the one from HD you have to piece together. It uses a mid-height bar, sideplates, a choice of backpads (Emblem on the backside of the pad mount if you like.), and a hardware kit. The whole assembly once put together is detachable, which I like when the wife doesn't go along. It's the same BACKREST in the link below, despite that the link is for a luggage rack.

I hope that helps...Sorry I don't have a pic of the bike since I installed it. I cna get one later after work and post it.
Thanks for the reply. I would really like to see pics as for me its a visual thing. I have no idea what the low/mid/high look like on the bike other than looking through the catalog.
Here are the exact items on my bike followed by a picture. The sissy bar risers are described as "LOW" in the Harley catalogue but is a misnomer. They are the ones recommended by the service dude and he was correct. The larger ones look silly (my opinion) and the lower ones won't be a good anchor for luggage, etc.
Here are the Harley Numbers which you can check on their website:
52866-06 Detachable Sideplates $139.95
52754-04 Sissy Bar Uprights 3 Screw medalian $94.95
52626-04 Top Stitched Bacrest Pad $69.95
53862-00 Sport Luggage rack-Chrome $ 134.94 (A Harley best seller)
CHA-CHING! $439.80 (plus tax)

Thank you for all that information. Kind of hard to get an idea with that big bag on it though. I am trying to gauge the hight of the sissy bar just being there when not being put to use. Not going to do a luggage rack as Ill just get a slipover bag or backpack for it if necessary.
I have a stock FXDC seat and the distance from the top of the passenger seat cushion to the bottom of the backrest pad is 3.5 inches. The pad is 7.5 inches high thus the top of the pad (and therefore the top hop on the back rest) is 11 inches off the top of the seat. According to the Harley Parts Book the Fat Bob only takes the low or the standard round bar backrest. Mine would be the Low so take it from there..
I have the quick disconnect HD set up. I also now have the luggage rack on the sissy bar so I can carry a travel bag. Most of the time I leave it all off and ride with a solo seat.

Perfect picture of what I was looking for. When you say this is the HD quick disconnect, does that mean its not the pieced together package, rather the one kit for $199 and its called the "tall" sissy bar?
Alansummrs, that is the same system I have but the wife wanted the bigger pad that wraps around her some so she doesn't feel like falling off sideways. I need to get the luggage rack mentioned above to keep my bag off the fender. Here is mine bad shot but was out riding on the west side of Ohau. Enjoy!.
