I have a 2006 Wide Glide. I have had it a year and a half with no issues. Last weekend I went on a ride and during the ride my brother-in-law told me my headlight was out. I switched it to hi-beam and it worked. I just figured the bulb had burnt out on low-beam. The next day I bought a new pair of H4 extravision bulbs and put one in. I then tried it to make sure it was working again and no luck. It was still not working.
I talked to a friend that works on bikes and he told me odds are the dimmer switch is bad. Anyone ever changed one? I am guessing you have to feed the wires down the bars and then under the tank. Is it possible to do without removing the tank?
Check the wires in the headlight bucket on the connector. One might be loose or broken.
If that's not it, open up the switch on the bars and look for a problem. You shouldn't have to remove the tank to get to the wiring, they should go into the frame right behind the neck.
I can see where the wires come out of the bottom of the bars and go into the frame right behind the neck...where do they go from there? Ignition switch? Do I need to remove the screws holding the speedometer/ignition switch panel out and get access under that panel?
Also where are the fuse block(s) located on this bike?
Ok, I have figured out the wires go to an opening behind the triple-tree neck of the frame accessed from the bottom. There are a bunch of connectors up in there. I have the wiring diagram so I think I am going to remove the tank for easier access this weekend and try to find the break or short in one of the wires. If I play with those connectors, the light will work intermittently.
Is there a tool to remove the individual wires from the connectors if I find the bad one?
Has anyone ever had a similar issue with the wiring in this location?
So, this weekend I took the bike apart enough to get to the connections under the neck of the frame and took the connections apart and put dielectric grease in each of them and put them back together. It seems to have done the trick. Afterwards I turned the ignition on and moved the wires/connectors around and the headlight never cutout. I hope that is the fix for my problem!
