I am trying to get a set of pipes for my fat bob but every time I look and see and do research I always see like 75% of people are putting the 2-1 style pipes on. I dont like the look of them so I doubt I will get pipes like this but curious as to why so many people are buying them.
They generate better back pressure for this engine, which they suggest makes them run slightly better. Personally I liked the look of a 2 into 1 on my FXDC. However, on my old softail (96) I preferred the look of a 2 into 2 (Sampson Ground Pounders), and to improve the back pressure I used exhaust cones and it worked well.
So bottom line...go with what you like best, there is always something else you can do to balance it out.

I'm getting the V&H Big shots 2:2 because I prefer the look and they say I'll get 2:1 performance! For a bit deeper sound I'm installing the Quiet baffles.
on a stock engine there was very little power difference between the big shots and the bassani road rage II on the dyno and I choose the big shots they looked better and had a lot deeper sound on the stock 96. after the 107 install, I switched to a 2 into1 thunder header and the power and tq was a big difference vs the big shots. and the thunder header has a lot deeper sound with the engine work. choose what u like, listen to different systems and their sounds. you will know which one you like!
When I have my fat boy originally I have rinehard 2-2 pipes the bike sounded and performed great, but just like you I was readind and everyone was saying yeah 2-1 is way to go bro you will pick up a ton, BS!! I got 2-1 re dyno the bike on same dyno by same tunner in same mounth, the bike lost 3 HP on top rpm and gain 4 lbs TQ on the midrange, did I fill any difference F&$@ NO, I didn't care for the look didn't care for the sound of 2-1, I totally regrade switching the pipes........
Good luck.
O by the way I don't talk out of my azz I do have the dyno ***** to back it up....
Pick your pipes based on what YOU want. It doesn't matter what everyone else is running. Lots of pipes look and sound different and will have different performance advantages. I love the power and looks of my Fat Cat, but sometimes miss the classic sound of some long 2-2's. Its all about what you want in a bike man...

I have those 2:2 s and love the sound without the baffles. I use earplugs only on the highway so the wind noise won`t make me deaf.
on my dyno runs I lost 2hp on top and gained 2 tq on bottom with the bassani 2 into 1 on stock motor also no B.S. I hated the Bassani sold it on ebay GOT $ 350 for it lost $300 smart move!!!! on big bore engine there is a difference. on the performance with 2 into 1 exhaust!
