Just don't over clean your K&N. They will pass a little fine dust until they get a coating of dust stuck to them. Once they get a little dirty the fine dust stops coming through. If you clean them all the time they are always passing the fines.
How would you ever know if small dust particles passed by the filter element?
I had this decision last year , I went with the S&S stealth . You can use your stock cover or go with one of 5 or 6 S&S cover styles for it and probaley others would fit also. It has a "stinger" / cone in the cover to direct air into the TB. It's the same money as the Big Sucker but comes in black.
Well, I don't know. My air filter does not look much like the one in your picture and besides, I'm pretty sure the topic on this forum is street ridden motorcycles, not desert operated helicopters. There may be a slight difference in the operating environment and the cleaning requirements.
I seriously doubt if any Street Harley will see as much dirt in it's lifetime as that H-60 sees in an hour.
You might be an expert on helicopter air filter maintenance and you might not be an expert on motorcycle maintenance. You absolutely don't know anything about me. I might not be an idiot.
Sorry about the rant. You definitely don't sound like an idiot. My apologies. But honestly, that was a dumb thing to say.
Give K&N a call, they will tell you to keep the filter well oiled, and not to clean it too often, and not to let the filter get covered like you originally stated. Their filters are made to pass MORE air than a paper filter. With that comes more dust. That is the reason for the oil, it will catch the dust and pass the air. Obviously don't over oil it, but even the directions in the recharge kits say to use a liberal amount of the oil.
