My 09 superglide custom was recalled for a gas cap that does not vent properly. My husband bought a new 2010 softtail custom with the same recall. He supposedly had it fixed. It did not fix the problem. The dealer put a new cap on his bike and that still did not fix the problem. Neither one of us puts more than 3/4 to a little more in the tank when filled up. I haven't filled mine since 2009 when the bike dumped about a gallon of fuel on me and all over the tank and motor shortly after buying the bike. This problem is eating my paint job under the gas cap. The service manager at the dealership said the paint was my fault due to putting too much gas in the tank. B.S.! I haven't had a full tank since two months after I bought the bike. It was in the shop 4 times before they figured out the motor mount was the wrong size. I was told then by the dealer that they had to loosen up all the bolts on my motor so "it could find a happy place". Can you believe that? The fuel cap problem is also eating the paint on my husband's bike as well. I even asked the service manager if he wanted to take a picture to send to Harley and he said no, that he would report it to them. I'm sure he is going to try to put that paint job on us as well. Mine is only black, his is Merlot and cherry. Harley needs to do more to be accountable for their mistakes. We pay a lot of money for an american made bike because we love them. The co. should respect us enough to do the right thing. I will not let them fix mine until they figure out how to fix his. I know they want to do the work so they can say they fixed it, in order for the paint job to fall on me. Anyone else having this same problem?
Welcome.
If I was having a problem like that with both the bikes as well as the dealer I would have been in contact with MOCO about 4 years ago. Maybe I'm not reading this right but it doesn't add up to me.
I also had that problem with my gas cap on my 09 SuperGlide. Luckily it hadn't eaten the paint off yet, but it would leak. My Dealer told me to push down hard on the cap as I tightened it, and I had no more leakage problems. Hope this helps a little.
My 2009 FXDC was recalled for the fuel cap problem but I never saw any leakage. I let them do their thing which (as I
understand it) involved "chasing" the filler neck threads to eliminate excessive paint which was keeping some caps from
screwing down tight.
On really long trip segments, I'll fill the tank above that little slosh plate so that fuel is right up against the cap when
it is screwed down. I've never had a leak and if anything was going to provoke one, that is probably it..
I didn't even realize there was a recall on this. Guess I should pay more attention...
My '09 will leak bad if I accelerate hard with a full tank. That was a big surprise the first time it happened and I got a right thigh full of fuel. Never had the problem until I had my tank repainted last winter. I'll see if Harley will still do the recall with custom paint, otherwise I'll just try to clean the threads myself and see if that helps.
I ride a 2009 FXDCi, about 15,000 on the clock. I had a similar incident on Friday. I had filled up 20 miles previously, not overfull, and had to brake from 50 mph, I had a surge of fuel out of the filler, which sprayed over me and the bike. Even went in my eye. The cap was fitted correctly, until it ratcheted. This could have been really serious.
I have recently had a problem just after refuelling, with some leakage after accelerating. Is this likely to be linked to the "anti slosh valve" recall?. I'll check the filler neck threads for paint. I may try another cap. Its made me feel really nervous about riding after a fill up.
I've been riding 35 years, mainly Brit bikes, all weathers,
and this is my first Harley, and I have never had this probem before.
