It's true it's all in the mount. You don't want to skimp on that. But if you have a good mount you can use any GPS on a motorcycle. There's a helpful video showing several different styles of GPS mount (and pros and cons) here: http://www.leadermotorcycle.com/gpsguide.html (includes a waterproof option for those who asked about that).
Im starting to really like the harley zumo 660 and the non harley garmin sumo 660. Now comes the question do I have to leave that mounting and wires on the bars all the time? IMO it doesn't look good and I won't have the gps on all the time
The only difference between the garmin unit and HD unit is the garmin has a sd slot for music as where the HD has HD shops built in but no SD slot.
other than that they are the same.
If you look around you can find a good deal. I paid $400 + shipping from my HD garmin 660 and $375 for my garmin unit.
I would consider this mount:
This is on my goldwing. I make my own mounts so I can put the gps in my eye sight better. This way I do not have to use a lock on the ram mount.
The garmin 660/665 takes about 3 seconds to remove or install. I just pop it off and put it in my pocket.
