Does this make sense?
unless there is something to use for tuning the bike (sert, pciii, etc), a "break in" map doesn't make sense. If there isn't a tuning device, the mods should be done, the ecm flash the HD sells should be applied, and thats it... there is nothing else to do at 1k or any later.
If there is a tuning device, a break in map makes perfect sense. They do the mods, slap on the tuner (I realize the sert is just software, "slap on" is a figure of speech
), and load a generic map that closely relates to the mods done. At 1k, after break in, the bike can be put on the dyno and dialed in.
No doubt, with no actual tuning option, then the break-in map thing is garbage as stated earlier.

....this sort of discussion is good, though....i mean, the whole thing does need to be addressed and cleared up with the '07 models having arrived...and with later models, of course
(sung to the tune of the version by Traffic of course
)I think its a good topic, it gets a little redundant after a few years, but I think thats what these forums are really for... to help spread information. If we relied on the dealers, we would be in a world of hurt... and certainly at their mercy. Folks coming in to the EFI world for the first time, that are into performance at any level, need to be fully informed so they A: dont get ripped off B: get a good running machine out of the deal.
People get pissed over the whole "which oil is better" topic, among a few others... they only keep getting rehashed because new people keep coming around looking to be informed.... and using the search feature in forums suck, way to many unrelated hits come back.
oh well, glad Kevin and I could help out.
btw - I just took a look at your bike kevin - what the hell is it? lol. I'm not a huge springer fan, but that thing looks great. It looks like it might have started as a Street Bob????
I've never heard of an EFI bike being tuned without a device such as a SERT or PCIII.
A "normal" 1k service does not include any kind of tune, it is merely a fluid change and making sure everything is tight, plus a clutch adjustment.
sounds like the dealer might be trying to pull a fast one.
And yes, these forums are great for disseminating information. We as customers would be in a world of hurt if we were in the dark. The dealers hate these things.
Thanks,

Did you put that springer front end on? I tried but found that the springer front end would not fit my Dyna Super Glide FXDI. It wouldn't turn enough because of the tank bolts on the neck. What did you do or is that a Wide Glide?

If you are talking about the digital dipstick, their reliability is iffy. Mine lasted about a year. there are some that have not had problems, but the majority of folks that buy them have issues.
I don't know about the analog temp dipstick and its longevity.
There is nothing wrong with running the bike stock. Just because it is stock, and slightly on the lean side, and therefore running a little hotter, doesn't mean you have a ticking time bomb.
