I am still on the learning curve here too. I am not a guy that will spend unlimited money for every last bit of HP.
For me the point of the upgrades is yes, to sound better but also to run better. The a/c give your bike more air in, the exhaust lets more air out. The tuner is to add gas to the mix because the bike is set to run lean from the factory. Not their fault, they have to meet emissions guidelines. Your bike will perform better but by running better I mean it will operate at lower temperatures and you don't have to sling wrenches to believe that is better for your bike.
My bike had the big shots on it when I got it. Added the stage one a/c and K&N filter but stayed with the stock a/c cover. I went with an old style Dobech TFI so I could adjust the fuel settings myself and not have to worry about mapping or an expensive tune job. My bike might not set the world on fire but I still have to hold on.
Parts can be had on this forum at very reasonable prices if you are patient and I have only had one bad deal out of about 20 with the members here. Lots of information about tuners on here too so do some research.

I literally just bought my bike last Monday and had long discussion about it. They are selling new bikes with full exhaust right out the door already installed no tune. They said same can be done with breather. But most want exhaust first.
I have been running short shots on my 2014 Street Bob since December. Still runs fine. I guess there's a chance it's running a tad on the lean side, I have no way to know.
I do know that my gas mileage is the same as before, it can still throw me back in the seat in any gear if i get into it, and it's loud as hell. There is avery noticeable decel pop with these, but it doesn't bother me.
