if i am worried about flicker i go with a setup like this... only issue is those boxes make it much harder to hide

as far as the headlight goes, yes on some you have to cut a larger hole... here is a shot of a repair i did cause the previous installer did a botch job and jacked up the back of the lamp... on mine i like to cut them and solder them back up so it is cleaner
i had to make the hole larger and then used a grommit to be safe for the wires

this way all you ahve in the small 5 3/4 bucket is this

i did not have much room to play with so i tucked the ballast on his fairing (he also went with a different kit than i use so this ballast was huge)

this is what the wiring the prev mechanic did

this is how it looked when i was done

i rebuilt his whole front harness

what i am saying is if you are going to do it, do it right
Install was a breeze, simple plug and play. I just had to drill a hole in the headlight bucket for the wires and then I reused there supplied grommet for a watertight connection. My Ballast is bolted to my top tree, I wasn't concerned about hiding it because you can't see anything behind the fairing anyways.
Kinda blue in this first pic, this was as soon as it was turned on so the bulb hasn't warmed up yet:

I don't have the black diffuser in the housing and I left the little metal reflector/shroud installed on the headlight bulb. You cant really tell from the pics but you can noticeably see in person that all the light is emitted from the top half of the headlight. I thought I had the light mounted off centered because the light pattern was angled, but after looking closer the bulb shroud is actually a little longer on the left side of the bike. I'm assuming its designed this way to allow you to adjust the light up a bit, while keeping the light out of oncoming drivers eyes. I adjusted it in the garage but will take a few 9/16" wrenches with me next time I'm riding at night to fine tune it. So far so good!
