You don't have to worry man, BS has 3 set screw attached to 3 long bolts, even they come loose, the whole air filter will come off. However I check my fasteners regularly, even blue loctite has no guaranteed my experience. What a sad story, I almost wanna cry.

My AN Big Sucker has a cover bolt. Behind that, there are 3 small bolts that thread into these long threaded 'tubes' with I believe hex heads on the tubes. The tubes then in turn thread into the backing plate. I'm assuming S&S, SE, etc use a different design.

Hi,

Gee thats no good as if those screws do come loose they straight in, the SE is protected from that happenening by those screws being on outside of filter

All the best
Thanks

!!!! PLEASE CHECK THESE SCREWS FOR TIGHTNESS IF YOU HAVE THIS STYLE AIR CLEANER!!!!!

First off, I have OCD when it comes to my bike and installing parts properly. I followed DK's instructions, put blue lock tight on every bolt and torqued them down when I installed everything.

If the threads in the throttle body/carb are good, and you have used medium blue thread locker on them and torqued them to spec, they will not come loose.

If you have any doubts, remove them, check the threads (both male & female) and use blue thread locker (medium) and re-install them to proper torque for your model. (for most models this is 40-60 inch lbs.)
I just re checked the torque on the screws. I started with 40 inch lbs per DK's instructions. I turned each screw at least a half turn before they reached 40 inch lbs. I have no doubt a few more miles and I would be starting a similar thread. I am so thankful I found this thread and a 1000 thanks to Dynam1te for the heads up. I still hate it happened!!!

So finally heard back from the shop on the bottom end, turns out the missing piston half was wedged in the oil catch at the bottom of the case, bending the tab downward. There's still a ton of metal shavings coming out of the oil passages as well, so a super heavy duty cleaning is in order assuming the bend tab can be remedied. Not sure on it yet. So far, I'm still going with option D. Send the flywheel, (seems to be unscathed) to dark horse, revolution 107 kit, head work, 58mm throttle body and SE injectors.
Any one with similar builds? Anyone use the revolution kit?

Pics of some more of the damage. That bend tab in the crank is supposed to catch the oil as it slings off the flywheel preventing unneeded oil drag on the motor. Not sure if it can be modified, or if I should just go with new cases...

I did not use the Revolution kit but have a somewhat simular build that you are thinking about. You mentioned having about $2K, well I think you are looking at about $4K even doing the install yourself. It adds up fast, your plan is fine but probably not the least expensive.

.....adds up fast w/o a doubt. My budget was $2,000-$2,500 and I ended up at $5k for my entire build! Headwork and bottom end is where all the money goes.

Wow. The destruction is stunning. Sorry man. If it were me with the budget you have, I'd just put a stock take-off motor back in and never have any issues again. If you wanna go fast, just use your leftover money and buy a used sportbike, ride it around the block once or twice and realize no matter how much money you throw at your Bob, you're only going to be going "Harley fast" anyway. lol
