I've put a couple of hundred miles on my '07 WG so far this year, yesterday it developed a really weird sound in the front end/fuel tank area. It sounds like on the old bikes when you had a bad speedo cable or like a gas cap that's loose and rattles. It only makes the noise when going over 10 mph, bumps in the road don't change it in any way, just a very random, hollow clicking sound. At first I thought it was coming from the speedo, but I'm not sure. I think I can feel it a bit in the left grip, but hard to tell with the damn bumpy roads here. The bike has custom handlebars, grips, cables, wheels, etc. I've checked the front end and everything appears tight. I'm at my wits end, any suggestions?
3 most common things:
1. gas cap, press down on it while riding and see if the noise goes awa.
2. Check steer bearing adjustment.
3. Tighten the tank mouting bolts. The front one is a known culprit.
My guess is the tank bolt, tighten it with a wrench.
It doesn't do it at all if I'm just sitting and idling, even if I rev the engine. When riding it only seems to do it above 10 mph. It does sound like a loose gas cap, but that's not it.
This was driving me crazy! I took it for another ride today, still sounded like the clicking was coming from the speedo area, made no sense to me. Then the front end started to feel a little squirrely and I had to pump the front brake several times for it to work. I jacked it up and turned the front wheel by hand, I could feel it. Took the wheel off, bad bearing left side. The bearing doesn't have 200 miles on it! I had a shop press in the bearing and I installed the wheel to spec. I'm glad it's an easy fix and glad I didn't wreck the bike.
Tighten the front tank bolt even more. I thought mine was tight also, then after buying a new gas cap I got really pissed off and cranked down on the front tank bolts. That solved it.
