Default Detatchable sideplates help

Hey guys I need some help. I had the dealer installdetatchable docking hardware on my 07 Dyna when I bought it. Well I picked up the detatchable sideplates today and I cant get them on. The issue seems to be that the plates dont slideforward enough in to the front mounting point so the rear of the plates dont line up with the rear docking points. The plates need to go further forward before they will line up and lock in to place, but I have already put a couple of nicks in the strut covers trying to push them forward so I decided to quit before I screw anything else up. It seems like the plates are pushing in to where the strut covers sort of curve a little hence the scratches. I am wondering if the dealer left out a spacer or something because it seems like the front mounts should stick out a little more so the plates could seat all the way without pushing in to the struts. I dont know I am a little frustrated. I spent some money on these things and they dont seem to work very well. Whats worse is I also ordered a detach solo rack today and Im sure I will have the same issues with that as well. Any help greatly appreciated. TIA...

Its an 07 Bob. Covered and locked for tonight, but maybe I can take a pic tomorow. I double checked the sideplate part # and they are the right ones. The docking hardware though, I dont know it was installed at time of purchase and I have no documentation or part # for it, so maybe wrong docking hardware? Not having installed it myself I haveno idea and I cant really tell if there is any adjustments that can be made to make things fit. I tried to get the sideplates on with a sissybar attached, then took the sissybar offand tried each plate seperatly and no go.It might go ifI really jammed it, but I dontwant to break the things or have something slip and scratch the fender. I guess if worse comes to worse I will take it back to the dealer I bought it at and have them either get the sideplates on, or install another docking kit. Unless someone has had a similar situation and was able to adjust or tweak something to make it fit?

Just thought I would bump this one time. Any of you guys that have HD's detatchable docking hardware, and either detatch sideplates or solo rack, did the plates mount right up and lock in to place or did you have to do any fiddleing/adjusting/forcing to make it work? Hopefully I get some advise before I pull out the slege hammer.

I have an '06 SB with docking hardware and the detachable luggage rack. Had to use a clamp to squeeze the side plates together to get it to line up with the docking hardward. Then it wouldn't slide into the front docks. I had to use a rubber mallet to force them forward all the way. Then it locked into place.

The first time I removed the rack I had to again use a rubber mallet to un-dock from the front docking hardware. When I re-installed it took less striking with the mallet to seat the front connections.

It may take several installs - uninstalls before it can be done without tools.

Make sure you take the old plates out. Mine fit right in with no problem.

Thats what I was looking for. Sounds like it is going to take some work to get these things to lock in place. Seems like it should be easier but maybe they designed it that way so nothing moves around or rattles when installed. Thanks rgustashaw...

I never had a problem with mine. Make sure that you're not sliding the front of the sideplate too far onto the pin. This may not allow the rear pin to line up with the catch.

Is the problem that the pins are too close together...just barely?

If so, it may be worth loosening the mounting pins and trying to "cheat" them a little closer together. You probably won't gain too much though.

It the pin to pin distance is off by too much, there is something wrong. Take it to you dealer....even though they probably won't offer too much help.

If it's the spacing across the fender, the spacers may not be the right ones. Or you just need to spread the sideplates apart more upon insertion.

Yeah, exactly, too close together just barely.

This is what I am wondering. The front docking point is really close to the fenderstrut, to where I think the sideplate is actualy touching the strutcover. I might be able to tap the sideplate with something to sort of force it forward to seat completly in to the front docking point, but it seems to be scratching the strutcover the more I try to force it. If the front docking point was a little further out I think it might be easier to get the sideplate seated all the way forward.
