Default DIY urethane motor mounts

Not sure if I have posted here before but definitely have picked up a lot of helpful info from this forum and it has been a god send in helping me repair my bike.

I have a 1997 fxdl my mounts have been banging when shifting and when going over bumps as well as my front exhuast pipe has been dented in from banging against the frame. On the highway I could feel it a lot when hitting bumps/grooves.

I recently found urethane mounts made by glidepro but they are close to $400. I have to try and save a few bucks if possible as I need to complete my chain conversion, Ceriani inverted front end conversion and a few other things. I was able to do both mounts for under $100. I hope this may help someone else that also is on a budget and looking for a solution to worn out mounts.

I did some research online and found some people using a commercial grade pourable urethane that you can purchase at Grainger to fill the motor mounts in cars. So i figured I would give it a go and see if it works.

Decon Flexane part number #15800 http://www.grainger.com/product/DEVC...460?s_pp=false

I decided to give it a go. I started obviously by removing my mounts.
I could see right away where the mounts had been flexing and that was where the banging/clunking noise was coming from.

Then the shittiest part.. . Cutting out the old soft rubber. I used a razor knife and an angle grinder.

I used duct tape to make a mold around the mounts after cleaning them with brake clean and engine degreaser. This is a very important step!!! They must be super clean!!

I then mixed the urethane with the hardener as per the instructions. Poured it in and let it set overnight.

Then baked them in the oven at 150 degrees for 24hrs.

You can shave the edges to make them look better if your would like. They really arent able to be seen on my bike as I have a lower front fairing and the rear mount is hidden up in the bottom of the bike. So I reinstalled them and went for a ride!

Definitely increased vibrations can be felt but the entire bike feels more controlled and tight. The throttle response has improved 100%. No more motor flopping around and banging my front exhaust pipe on the frame. lol

Josh.

Interesting. Curious to see how this holds up long-term.

Umm. Its a really cool experiment but I'd be a tad wary. There's a fair bit more to the motor mounts than a block of rubber/plastic.

The mounts and the rubber in them are designed quite cleverly (until they get old and fail, like yours had). They absorb vibration and movement differently in different directions. This means they dampen the nodding of the engine, whilst stopping the engine moving side-side which affects handling.

There's also that your new mount could fail, leaving the engine, exhaust and back wheel floating or fallen. That would be pretty dangerous.

Interesting. Googled it and lots of posting on using it for cars, but like you said nothing on bikes. Keep us posted as to how it lasts.

Be careful man. If one of those didn't adhere correctly it could shear and you know what that would do. I'd consider the vibratechnics front mount and a stock rear, you'll find the handling to be what you want and you'll be safe. There's a lot of torque and stress on those mounts and it's all that holds it together.

Reiterate what everyone else said. There's entire professions devoted to chassis engineering. .with expensive testing involved. There are some things best left to professionals.

I'd say creative but not something that I would do. Good luck!

I don't think it will have the flex you need to absorb the stresses.
It may last but I think there will be vibrations.
