So after three great days of riding down the German back roads and in the Alps, I had to make my way home on the Autobahn on Sunday. About 200 kilometers into a 700 Kilometer journey, while cruising in the left lane at 130km/h, the bike just cuts outs. I try to restart before slowing on the left shoulder. I cycled the key to no avail. no lights, noting on the speedometer, no fuel pump squeal. I had just started it up not 10 minutes ago without issue. Roadside assistance came along and the battery was getting plenty of juice and the fuses checked out fine. Its a 2012 Street bob with 5300 miles on it. What is the likelihood that it is the ignition switch like the roadside assistance guy suggested?
That's actually a very good possibility. Less than a week after I bought mine brand new, the same thing happened to me. I got it "fixed." A year to the month later, it happened again. Apparently, to save costs, the dealership rebuilt the tumbler or some ****, they said. So that just added to my fury of being stranded a second time. Needless to say, I made them replace the whole part, and I haven't had any problems since. What happened was when I would jiggle the key in the ignition, the lights and fuel pump priming would cycle on and off quickly like a short.
Update: The bike finally got dropped off at the dealer on the 14th of July due to several TDYs. The computer at the dealer said initially that it was the Horn/Headlight/Left turn signal switch. Unfortunateley, there were none available in Europe, so it was a 10-day wait for the part to get to Belgium. Apparently, that didn't work. So they ordered a new ignition switch, which was there in a day. I went to check on it yesterday around closing time. Apparently , starting Tuesday) they are going to go in and check ALL of the electrical connections. Wondering hat the likelihood of me getting this thing back for our Clubs motorcycle rally this coming weekend is.
Some bare wire left unprotected, eventually finds metal to ground out on.
I always seem to find some bare wires when I'm working on my new bike.
Two bikes in a row with wires exposed in the worst of places.
I carefully protect the exposed.
Good luck.
I spent all of last season trying to diagnose the same prob. Changed out the ignition c/w new key. Never broke down since including a 4800 km ride out of the province. Retuned last week without any break downs, prob fixed.
So, Tuesday (they are closed Sunday and Monday) the dealer dug into the electronics and decided to try and replace the BCM. Luckily, they got permission to take one off of a bike in Germany. So, it was a two day wait instaed of having to wait until the 28th. They hooked up the new BCM and got NOTHING!!! Now apparently, they are going into the wiring harness. Guess I'm on my Sporty for the rally... grrrrrr. Would it be taking this long in the US?
