I posted something similar to this a while back. K&N chimed in and said the red fading out of the filter oil is normal and that the filter will work as designed.
Yes the red will fade but if you wait until it's white your late cleaning/ with fresh oil. I have K&N on all my bikes When they turn a pink I clean and oil. that is usually around 8,000-10,000 miles.
If you did not buy the K&N filter separate you probably don't have one. It does say K&N on the filter to. I have several of the HD's that come with the stage 1 high flow kit. It comes with a fiberglass filter which is white.
Arlen ness is now using a silicone type
Filter in there new air cleaners.
NO OIL REQUIRED.
It's plain white in color and it's incased
In stainless steel.
Only needs to be cleaned as usual.
yes iam sure I have a k&n its stamped on the filter. the thing came out of the box red so its supposed to be oiled. when heated the oil runs to the bottom of the filter and drips off. just the heat from sitting in the sun will make the oil bleed off. the filter has to be bad
I have never heard of that happening. If it is running down you are probably putting too much. I do not like the spray kit. It's hard not to apply too much. I use the one with a flip top, squeeze type.
I wonder if you apply too much it will cause it all to run. When done correctly and dried properly it should feel slightly oily and red in color. It has to dry good.
Yea my K&N Filter will start to lighten up on the top after a couple months, By then the front is dark grey/light black, time to clean out the bugs and 're-oil. After cleaning let it dry completely in the sun a couple hours, Hit it very lightly with oil and wait for it to spread out, turn it over an lightly hit the areas that aren't quite red enough. Then I turn it over again to spread out/absorb some more, Then I'll blot with a clean micro fiber cloth and look for an equal stripped pattern, Too light I'll spray some more from a foot away very lightly,Too dark I'll blot it some more. So what if it takes me half a day to clean my filter, Yea I know it's not that big a deal, OCD can be a biatch lol
