Default Check Engine Light Help

Hey all
Bike started a little rough today after sitting about 2 weeks. Got the check engine light on after starting then it went a way after a few seconds. Did this twice after starting the bike but the bike is running good now.

Ran the code diagnostics and here is what I got: U-1097 which is loss of speedometer serial data to ECM. Cleared it and started the bike did not come back.

Can someone explain what this code is for and if it is a big concern. I have a repair manual but not the electrical manual. Going to Hot Springs next month and want to be sure I am ready to roll with out any incidents.

Thank you

my guess is the hiccup occured when you cold started after two weeks. there could have been humidity in the air or the bike basically didn't want to wake up! lol I wouldn't bother with it unless it starts happenning alot. Or if the bike begins to stall out on ya.

I would remove the ignition switch & speedo cover and take a good look at the main connector for backed out terminals, and fretting, this is caused by moisture and causes a bad connection between the terminals and pins in the both connectors. Fretting corrosion looks like little dark smudges on the electrical terminals and appear where the actual electrical contact is being made. In less severe cases it may be unable to be seen or identified without the use of a magnifying glass. and if this concern is present use a one inch or smaller nylon bristle brush to clean both side oh connectors and apply a small amount of dielectric lube to both sides of the connectors and work them in and out several times and that will take care of that problem have seen this concern quit a few times with connector out in the elements.

I had this issue after my engine build, so I kinda did what target64 mentioned - just opened up the instrument console, disconnected everything then reconnected and no more code.
