well thanks for all the info. mines a 06 SE so i guess no oil. i may change toi a k&n seems many people like them better when i nees a replacement.
No. Oiling the SE filter element will ruin it. Oiled air filters are old technology. Filter media materials technology has come a long way since the days of "the dirt sticks to the oil" idea from the 1930's.
Sorry, but you are passing along info that is not 100% correct. HD may be making SE filters now that are not oiled. But they were oiled, at least up until a year or two ago. This is a Stage I kit for my bike....The pic speaks for itself....
Dude: Somebody sold you an old filter. The new ones are dry/disposable. The replies about the filter easily clogging are correct. The oiled filters work better for the first few thousand miles of use but then become restrictive. Especially in a dirty environment. If you clean the K&N oiled filter every 2000 miles it's better. But not many people do and that is where the problem comes in. Especially with EFI bikes where there is a intake airflow sensor feeding data back to the ECM.
I checked this out at the dealer a few weeks ago for a friend , the NEW ones are not oiled. I put K&N filters on every motor that I own that they make them for . I put one on our company van and got 3 mpg more on a trip home from Florida 2 years ago.I am a firm believer in thier product..Mark...
wish hd would have sold me the old style oiled filter.seeing as the blue crap ring is junk.have a k&n filter now.for the ones that dont know the blue ring will fall apart if try to wash it out. Id post pic but for some reson it dont seem to be working to upload.I have had a pic from it in earlier posts

Dude: I know exactly what I bought. I wanted the kit foras a spare for the parts. I bought it sealed in the box for 10 bucks at a swapmeet.
I've been running a K&N in my 2000 for 64k miles. I haven't had any problems.

My '06 SE filter was some type of dry green paper-like media; tore after about 3000 miles... I run K&Ns in everything I own. Makes a big difference out here in the dusty sticks.
But the clog REALLY fast. Infact it is my experience and opinion that a really dusty environment is a place you should NOT use a oiled filter.
I have some experience in the dust to end all dust as well. You cannot name one place on earth that is dustier than the silt beds of Baja. I don't think I have ever seen a oiled filter there.
Just my opinion.
I run a KN on my bike, in my Duramax and in my Jetta. Love them.
Yep, I agree - Baja is an extreme enviroment. Mine is a little less intense; 4 miles round trip to pavement on limestone roads. All the filters get checked on a regular basis and the bike filter gets a bath each fluid change.
Off topic: Saw your 48 *****'s in a different post - I had a 4WD '63 *****'s Overland wagon (w/ the ambulance doors) Man, I miss that beast; had to sell it when my baby boy arrived 18 years ago!
