Unhappy Problem : melted terminal on battery??

So I had nice ride on Sunday, twisties in mountains for 2-3 hours, wasn't going fast - 40-50mph, 2-3 gear. When I pulled to the gas station and filled in, couldn't start bike - she turned starter, couldn't start and then just clicked and then bike went black.
So i called roadside assistance, but decided to take a look at the battery OMFG:

that's negative terminal
I removed trickle charger terminal, tightened up - bike started like a champ after that...
I'm wandering what that was? There's no leak on battery, but what could cause such a meltdown?

Was the terminal loose at all ? Otherwise your starter is drawing a lot of amps. Check the connection on the starter. Dielectric grease is a good habit on wire connections..

Similar thing happened to me(not as bad) but the screw was vibrating loose and arching the connection. This caused your meltdown, so no battery leak. Just make sure to tighten and check the connection ever so often.

Just a loose connection on battery terminal. You should check battery connections every 5 to 6 month for tightest.

Would a little blue loctite be ok to use on the battery bolts?

Thanks everyone. in fact I noticed that it was a bit loose - on another terminal though, but I guess it did the trick.. Will be paying more attention to that. And will use dielectric grease..
