Default Odometer milage?

Was thinking of buying a used gauge cluster for my 09 Electra Glide. Can anyone tell me if the odometer milage stays with the gauge or is it logged in the ECM and will register with any HD gauge that is model /year compatible? Thanks

I don't know how the Motor Company makes them but my F150 ford pickup it stays with the odometer I know this because I change the gauge cluster in it and the mileage of the used gauge cluster I installed stayed. I dropped off 70000 miles

I believe with the 09 Electra Glides the odo is in the ECU rather than in the speedo itself because when looking at the gauge change kit from HD there is no install instructions nor any transfer cable for the odo reading.

Well, when I ordered the new speedo /odometer from the Harley I had to include my present odometer reading in a comment window on the order page. When the new gauge arrived, there was a printed label on the speedo box with the mileage I told them. I thought there would have been a little more legal accountability in doing it that way, but I guess not. I know with cars, they are pretty particular in my state (Ohio) as far as accurate mileage on a title transfer. Thanks for the responses. Mike

So the Odo is set by the factory prior to shipping rather than in the ECM.

Yes it was. I ordered the gauge direct from New Castle Harley Davidson online parts web site. I questioned the odometer reading prior to ordering the gauge. They responded and told me to just add the present mileage in the comments window when I place the order. Did that, and it came with a tag stuck to the box with that mileage. I haven't installed and powered up yet. I'm in the middle of a major build on my bike. So hopefully it will work okay.

Around the time the motorcycles started with CAN bus communication things changed regarding used speedometers.
I believe it was sometime about 2004 that things changed.
At that time it became that mileage is now stored in the motorcycle ECM....BUT...there is a VIN number that becomes registered to the speedometer once it is attached.
The speedometer gets married to the bike.
A used unit would not be operational.
Acquiring a used speedometer from another motorcycle of that era and trying to use it on your bike would result in a VIN error being displayed in the speedometer.
If you go online and look at replacement speedometer instructions it should be possible to read how many miles it takes until a brand new replacement speedometer locks with the bike.
If you purchase a NEW speedometer from a dealer for that era then it should come with a wire connector and instructions that will show how to transfer the information in the ECM to the speedometer...it will also explain how many miles to lock to that specific bike.
There are several youtube video's you can review.
Now:
Why do you need to change the speedometer?.... most problems relate back to the speed sensor at the transmission.

No problem with my present speedometer. Just wanted to change the style of gauge on my bike. You may be correct, I'm just going by what the dealer told me. I may find out different when I power up for the first time with the new gauge installed.
But the new speedometer was programmed from the factory with the mileage I gave them.

I know that the softail speedo/tach combo gauge comes with the data cable to transfer the information from the current speedo (including the ppm for setting the speed of the speedo) to the new speedo. My question really is that if the new speedo is not setup to reflect the PPM from the old speedo then your speedo will be off, or is that stored somewhere else?

Data cable transfers information (miles ridden) from ECM to brand new speedometer.
New speedometer becomes married to bike after a certain number of miles.
