Installing Aftermarket LED Strip As Rear StopTurn Lights
Hello guys, noob here trying to gather some information, the sled is a 2015 RGS . I'm trying to install two 8" flexible LED strips to the rear of the bike as running/stop/turn signal. The strip has 5 wires; RED for brake, WHITE for tail/running light, GREEN for left turning signal, YELLOW for right turning signal and Black for ground (see attached pic). Currently running LED Bullet Rings and LED Tri-bar purchased from Customs Dynamics. The plug connecting them has 6 wires total, 2 Black then 2 sets of 3 wires each, BLACK/PURPLE/BLUE, (see attached pic). Can I tap the strip wires directly to this plug? If so, which color goes where? Can someone help me installing them? Any input is greatly appreciated.
man if i were a cop and you crossed my line, i foresee a few citations.
research dot and state laws.
but, you may get away with it until you are in an accident and a good lawyer gets ahold of it.

OK Mr. Sheriff, enlighten me. FYI, there is absolutely nothing illegal in my state about having red LED lights acting as stop lights in the rear of a motorcycle as long as they are visible from a thousand feet away. You can educate yourself and check out Florida Statute 316.221 at your leisure. And as a matter of fact, I don't see much difference between these strips and the Plasma Rods many are running on their Harleys out there. Can we now get back to topic?
The only issue you may have is that on your bike is that there is no separate turn signal wire to connect to your yellow wire, which will energize your yellow LED's. It is combined function with the brake in the bike.
Blue/Brown is R Turn / Brake
Blue/Purple is L Turn / Brake
There is a dedicated brake wire (Blue/Red) to connect your Red wire to.
Running lights would be Solid Blue to your White wire
Black is ground.
These colors come from custom dynamics plasma rod instructions for 2014 and up touring. The colors would be at the input side of the tri-bar or the connector under the seat. I don't have my FSM handy. https://www.customdynamics.com/media...lasma_Rods.pdf
This means that when you brake the yellows would come on, the turn side would cause the yellow to flash. Your red would go bright too. Somebody may make a converter or something to separate out a turn only wire.

this is the Diagram for the 2018 RGS, I imagine is same for your model year. This is from the Molex connector.. I just finished install this weekend
Paid $9.99 on Amazon. I used a few crimp connectors, and some soldering. I works just fine.
I can not testify about the legality in your state, but it would seem to me completely ridiculous a Cop would pull you over for increasing visibility on the road, (unless you have a flashing blue, yellow, or red light) simulating a service vehicle.
I am not sure that would even hold in a court of law, as long as you follow your state statutes. But I am no legal expert..please check your local laws.
FIRST AND FOREMOST, STATES CAN NOT RELAX FEDERAL LAW, ONLY MAKE THEM STIFFER!!!
it was said that the hd lights were to be REPLACED with the accent led strips. hd has to use federally mandated lighting certified by dot. do these led accent strips have these certs???
yes, states do allow accent lighting with some twists. some do not allow emergency colors and some do. texas will if the do not flash and extend not past 75 feet i believe. at one time, cops used to look at these things but they have no time, state inspections are suppose to catch these but they do not so what is the deterrent, lawyers!!!
now for a legal twist!?!
do you know what smoked or black out lens covers are???
suppose you put a set on, you think you are looking cool but!!!
you get into an accident and the question is raise that YOU contributed to the accident because of illegal lighting and poor visibility. federal mandates stipulated the lighting has "X" brightness at "Y" distance which the covers have now voided!!!
i will be dancing going to the bank with my wheel barrow full of money!!!!
it was asked for opinion, yep they are like sphincter nerves, everyone has one, you do know what that is, do you.
an 18 wheeler can get dot'd for ONE marker light out!!! guess what??? suppose the light was added by the driver and wasn't required?? yep, citation could be in hand because the reg says ALL lighting MUST be illuminated. do you think a motorcycle is exempt?? poor naive chap, all it takes is an officer to wake up cranky, it is up to him to decide.
better yet, go to the state police and get their sphincter opinion, myself, i do not care, i'm still dancing.
i do not think you will find that in the code of regulation for dot compliant lighting. so the question be is that color really green? just because you were told it was?? ANYTHING is debatable.
ANOTHER POINT IS:
JUST BECAUSE you have dot on the light DOES NOT make your vehicle compliant!!!
all vehicles MUST comform to spec per that vehicle. for ex: you can not put a 1949 ford truck light on a 2018 truck. every light has a SAE code. every mfg MUST have approved lighting. basically the same with emission crapola.
do as you wish, all it takes is one officer to decide to do something. i got dot'd in california and the officer even creepered under the truck, if i leaked more than 3 drops a minute, i could not go in as it was, i got wrote up for a brake linkage that had a slight bow on the trailer, i talking having to be right up one it to see it.
as for your point, a federal officer can enforce federal, to he$$ with state law.
Show me a federal traffic cop. . . and yes I am trolling because you don't have to get that worked up over this, remember it's his bike, his ticket. By the way, the lights are red and amber not a green light in sight.
