Default '99 Ultra charging issue

Pretty sure I'm dealing with a bad regulator here.
Have a post in the wtb section for one now lol

Bike is as stated in title.
Mostly stock other than cams, slip-ons, and pc3 installed 12 years ago.

Replaced a dead stator 11 years ago.
Been good all these years.

Last week when riding at night I noticed my lights dimming every time the turn signal flashed.
Voltmeter was only showing 13v at speed, dropped a little at idle.

Weird thing is...when I hooked up my dvom, it was charging upwards of 16v while the gauge still showed 12.5-13v. (What would do that?)
Checked all wiring and grounds. Nothing found.
Checked stator output and resistances. Everything within specs.
Now when I start it all voltages are good, until I raise the rpm's a few times and the voltages creep back up to 16v or so.

I'm really thinking that the original 19 year old regulator is failing.

The old lady and I are both on disability, so funds are extremely limited for us.
Can't afford to just throw parts at it that won't fix it.

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance

Joe

16VDC is definitely too high. Try the two Charging System Sticky's at the top of the page of this forum. .

Thank you.

I did and the only test that wasn't in the manual was to check for voltage from the regulator unplugged.
I have about 2.5v out of both leads from the regulator.
No shorts through stator to ground.
.1 ohms resistance across stator
almost 70 VAC at 3k from stator
battery tests good
no problems found with any wiring

Certainly sounds like a bad 19 year old regulator!!! lol

Just a quick follow-up to this.
Had no time to order a new regulator.
Leaving for the Harley Rendezvous Wednesday morning.
One of my club brothers had an older bike sitting doing nothing.
We robbed the regulator off it for now and it is working as intended.
19 years on the original regulator....not too bad
