Default Street 500 Startup Issue

Hello All,

First post, so please advise if I get anything wrong.

Bike: Street 500 2015 ~3000 miles - No Mods
Problem: Bike won't start after self diagnostics.

Details: Turning on the bike starts the self diagnostics. The speedometer needle goes from left to right. Then all speedometer lights (Turn single indicators, etc), stay lit. Pressing the starter button after turning kill switch on with clutch in does nothing. Fuel pump does not start. Horn doesn't work. Headlights are on.

Tried:
Battery - checks out
Relays - checks out
Starter solenoid - checks out
Fuses - checks out

Harley dealer picked it up and told me the speedometer needs to be replaced.

I have not yet gotten to talk to the tech working on the bike, but I am told he is a "Master Harley Mechanic". The service counter person didn't supply any level of technical information when asked. They replied that "that bike has lots of electrical problems". And one thing leads to another and this is the first thing they found.

This marks me as extremely odd. Analogy: If I go start a car and all the dash lights come on, but when I try to crank it over and it doesn't crank; I wouldn't start by replacing the instrument cluster. I am not a "Master Harley Mechanic" by any means. And I am not saying they are wrong. It just sounds like a really odd place to start. My understanding is that the self diagnostics is failing. There is surely a way to get diagnostics codes. I have talked to three different biker friends and they say it sounds odd.

So I guess my questions are:

Does this sound odd to anyone else?

Is there a consumer code reader? My searching didn't turn up anything.

Would it be considered bad form to ask another local Harley Dealer for an opinion if I am unable to talk with the mechanic?

Thank you for any assistance.

I ma not familiar with the working of the Street series bikes; but, all the electrics on these newer bikes are tied together; so i guess maybe it could be a speedo issue, but sounds a bit far fetched. This bike has all kinds of electrical problems - are you the original owner? If not, did previous owner do any mods. What are all these issues? Ask dealership for diagnostic records. If the street bikes are similar to other Harley's, you can read codes through the speedo and do not need a code reader. No issue with going to another dealer.

You state :Pressing the starter button after turning kill switch off with clutch in does nothing. If kill switch is off, then nothing will happen.

I bought it brand new. Only owner. No mods. Kill switch is in on position - updated post. The service desk person stated "This bike has all kinds of electrical problems." I don't know if she was stating the bike type of my bike specifically. I have not found a way to get diagnostic codes from the bike. I have seen that other Harley bikes have a way to read out codes through the odometer. Yet to find instructions for that with this bike.

Without physically assessing your bike, and with the little information provided, it's a crap shoot on offering any type of response. Is there alot of wiring in the speedo that runs bike, I think not, but I'm not a "Master" Harley Mechanic either. IMO, the speedo shouldn't really be a factor...something's amiss somewhere and you're sure you didn't short, cut, splice, work on any wiring?
