Default Regulator, stator, overcharging Issues

Hello folks, I need help!!

Long story but here we go... I'm on a 2000 Ultra, FLHTCUI-EFI, 63,000 mi. My stator quit charging, I tear into it, it's def burnt. I change stator and regulator, thought it was fixed charging 14.3V at the battery, rode it about 6 miles and the volt meter on bike shows it quit charging at about 9V. I continued to my destination... I exit, bike starts smoking and stalled. Smoking big time, so now I'm off it and the f#@&=ing regulator is on fire!! I got it put out but had to disconnect battery to kill all power. Get it home, stator seems ok as it's charging 24V@2000 RPM, 45V@2000 RPM, 80V@3000RPM. I changed regulator, it's charging fine at batt., checking reg temp while running and it's getting hot, so I put a fan on it and the temp stops rising. Now I test ride, 3.5 mins from the house my speedometer and odometer die, and volt meter maxes out at 16V on bike. It has done this several times as I've test ride a few times. Now on the highway at higher speeds and RPM it's worse!! I felt if it's charging 16 or more volts the battery is about to blow under my ***!! When I stop, take seat off battery is pretty hot but negative terminal and cable are very hot! I agree with a local HD tech who says I have a bad ground. I changed the first neg cable off batt to frame, tested out ok (so i thought) test ride and seemed better until it spiked again! Im baffled and i can't stand electrical issues!!! The bike is clean and well kept. I'd appreciate ant input if us can. Thanks folks!

Good day

Check the regulators ground wire . Disconnect the output cable and Ohm out both the POS and NEG from reg to battery.Disconnect Battery to starter and to ground and ohm them out too. Sometimes corrosion can occur under the insulation.

And that's a great looking ride.

Electrical problems are often a challenge to identify and resolve, so find a man who can. You're baffled, so find an indy who isn't! We're spread all around the World in here and can't see or touch your bike, unfortunately. There are Stickies at the top of this section on diagnosing your charging circuit, but they will only help you so far.

This is sound advice. If your new regulator smoked, then you have either a defective regulator, or wiring/cables that have high-resistance. I would remove all connections and clean and tighten them, at the battery, frame, and everywhere in-between. The system is very basic; if the components are good, you have to sort out the wiring.

Definitely sounds like a ground issue from the regulator back to the chassis. Regulators supposed to shunt excess voltage and keep it down at 14.1v.

Yeah but I haven't found it yet. What you think if I jump dirty ground strait to battery?? Or jump clean and dirty jyst to test...

Disconnect the DC plug at the regulator, and with an accurate DMM measure the resistance from the negative terminal on the cable side to battery ground. It should be virtually 0. If not ya got a wiring issue.

The 2004 Manual says the Reg ground is on the right side transmission exhaust bracket.
