Dyna speedo puzzle
I'm new on the block, but I hope that I've come to the right place for HELP!
My 2001 Dyna FXD is having some puzzling speedometer issues. Let me list the symptoms that I've observed so far...…
First of all I committed a great sin about a year ago...I let my bike sit untouched in the garage for more than 8 or so months (out of town, bad weather, etc.).
When I finally got my bike out again for a ride, I noticed the check engine light (CEL) come on a few times, then go out, then come on again....each time for a few minutes. I didn't notice anything in particular wrong with the bike at the time.
A few rides later, the CEL came on for a little longer, then I noticed that the odometer went blank and the speedo needle dropped to zero, but I didn't notice anything else wrong.
I spoke to our local Harley dealership about all this and they suggested that I pull out the speed sensor and clean off any metal that was attached to the magnetic face, which I did...there was a surprising amount of filings that I took off (but I haven't done that before, so I don't know if the amount was unusual or not).
I have pulled the speedo connections apart and cleaned and added dielectric grease to the pins, and have now changed the tranny oil (hardly any metal filings came out with that, which made me happy

Now the current symptoms are-
- engine starts and runs fine
- odometer & speedo needle stops working when the tach. reads higher than about 1200 rpms
- odometer & speedo work when tach. reads at or less than about 1200 rpms...I can pull in the clutch and coast down a hill at 40 mph (engine idling) and speedo & tach. are functional
- all turn signals work, but they don't self cancel when the odom./speedo is not working
So, what the heck?
It seems that the speedo is able to function, but does it need to be replaced? Is it the speed sensor? Something else? I don't really want to just start throwing $$ at replacing a lot of stuff that may be fine.
Any thoughts on this puzzle would be appreciated!!
Also, I did access the Diagnostic Trouble Codes with the odom. and the only one that read "set" was d08 Speedometer power overvoltage
(not sure what this means)
I checked voltage readings across the battery terminals, 13.5v with the engine off, 18.5v idling & 19.5 at 3600rpm.
I replaced the Voltage Regulator and BINGO, speedo/odometer are back to working again!
