Default No electrical power

The problem started with the electronics shutting off temporarily when I pushed the start switch but has turned into not having any electrical power when I turn the ignition switch on. The battery is fine. I’ve checked all the fuses and the ignition switch. When the ignition switch is off the battery tests over 13v and with the ignition switch on the battery reads almost 0. If there were a short taking up all my juice I would think I could find it by following the smoke and flames. My only thought is that it is the starter but with the switch in the on position for over a minute everything is cool. I would think the starter would get warm if it were shorted. Thank for any input.

Are you taking the voltage reading at the battery posts or somewhere else?

"The battery is fine" ... If you haven't already, a load test will ensure that your statement is correct ... I've seen more than a few check voltage only later to find out that the battery is toast ... even a new one can be bad.

I tested at the battery itself. I don’t have a load tester but I did jump it to my truck and it wanted to turn over. I will replace the battery and continue to diagnose. This battery is only three months old. Thanks for the posts.

Your battery is toast. It makes 12v, but can't provide any amperage, thats why the voltage drops to 0

Put a charge on it, and see if it is a battery problem, or charging. Get it running and see it goes up to 14.4volts when revved up, will telling you it doing some charging. Granted this by no means definitive. Last time, I charged battery started it, waited a few days, and it did not start, so I knew the battery was not holding a charge. With a 2nd bike, I can fool around with stuff like this.

Since it tried to start, when jumping, I am going to guess starting system is not the issue. More times than not, it is the battery

Also make sure connections are tight.

I’ll get a load tester also and keep an eye on it. Thanks for the advice.

I doin't know if load tester cost much. I just don't use them. If the battery is 3 months old, and you didn't buy a dumb one to save some money, you should focus on charging. Just need a miulti meter.

Since I have no idea what bike or year you have, since you didn't share that critical info, I can't give to much info on what #s to expect. Probably around 20v AC per 1k rpm. A DC clamp on can be used to check too. Some years you can get at plug to stator easier than others.

I wouldn't bother with load test on 3 month old battery, unless you bought crap, or just bad luck. Start with charging.
