It makes no difference whether the donor car is running or not.
Amperage is drawn, not pushed.
The car battery has many times the amperage capacity of the alternator.
You can hook it up to a 12v battery as big as a house, it doesn`t matter, the battery will only provide the amperage that the bike draws, it does not push amperage into the bike....

I have a visual of the bike exploding into a firebomb in the guys garage..anyone else get that? the "POP" and smoke from under the "fuel tank"?
Off the top of my head all i can think is the jumper cables were hooked up backwards and it blew a fuse or breaker or fusible link etc.
