But is it possible for a battery to die while riding the bike and the f'ing thing cut off? I remember my old enduro would run with a dead battery just had to push start it..

Brother in law cracked his negative ground tobth3 bike not battery. Lost all power. If yours showed signs of life then probably not the case...but if its absolute zero with no signs of life then maybe.
+1 on the magneto, but:
a pmg system will run without a battery also. a lot has to do with the type of VR. if you could push fast enough, the pmg will output enough volts/amps to run the system. however, with the big brothers looking out for ya, it would be a tough sell due to the electrical load mandated, aka, lighting.
if you look at the hd schematic, you will see the VR is tied in after the battery and when the battery is fully charged, the system runs off the VR and the battery making up the short fall.
i used to run my tricked out honda 305 scrambler without a battery on the track and used a 12v dry cell for the street. push off vs kick, had electric foot but required a better battery than a lantern type. the VR was a selenium type, simple but worked.
