Hey, I have a chopper with an open primary (see picture below). Currently the charging system is faulty and I have narrowed it down to the stator (0 AC volts at the stator plug). Anyone know how to remove the open primary to get to the stator on this bike? I assume I have to remove both pulleys, but if there is a way to do it without doing that I'd appreciate it. First time with a domestic bike like this.
Ok so I got it off finally. Now I have a weird question, with an open primary there is no primary oil (essentially a dry clutch). But there is DEFINITELY a drain plug for the section with the Rotor/Stator (circled in the picture below). Why is that there? I assume no oil should be in this section?
if the crank seal leaks, i guess this would be where you test for and drain. hard to say, who made the system. another thing if the belt isn't made to run in oil, oil on it will destroy it, been there done that on a final drive belt when the oil tank over flowed.

OK thanks. Yeah didn't seem to make sense, I assume the stator/rotor should not have oil on them? My crank seal may be leaking.
in its normal environment, it does ride in oil. but you are fortunate in that you caught the cracked magnets with could destroy the stator and def putting a lot of electrical hash in the ac output which can lead sensitive electronics to behave badly.

When you say "in it's normal environment" you mean on a motorcycle that uses a closed primary correct? As in it DOESN'T have oil in that compartment on an open primary bike? Still slightly confused by that area having a drain plug and want to make sure this is correct.
