Default Electrical oddities

I recently inherited a 2005 Electra Glide Ultra Classic from my dad when he passed... I am told he kept great care of it, however I am not sure what he's done to it. I've had several bikes before, Cruisers, Sports Bikes, etc, however this is the first touring... heck my first Harley... Anyway, when I first got to it, the battery was completely dead, after sitting, I would suspect, at least 9 months untouched. I went ahead and charged the battery and it all seems fine. It starts and runs great, no loss of power or any mechanical problems that i can see. However, it randomly throws a CEL for about 5 seconds, then goes away. Also, randomly, the red security key lights up for a while, and also, randomly, the red battery light will come on. Shortly after the red battery light comes on the entire cluster shuts down... the Tach and Spedo both drop down to zero for maybe a second, and then come right back to normal. No loss of power, engine continues to run great... shortly after these occur, all the problem lights go away and everything works as normal.

It is throwing several problem codes, and I was able to figure out how to capture them...

U1097
U1255
U1300
U1016

All look related to connections of some kind. I am sure it isn't going to be an easy one to diagnose, and I don't really have the tools to do so, but thought maybe someone had experienced these symptoms before, and maybe it was something specific. Worth a shot before I take it to the local dealer for a once over...

TIA

Thanks!... I was thinking maybe it was the battery, but since it starts up just fine, multiple times over the course of a week since it was recharged I assumed it would be fine. I'll try load testing it... makes sense.

If you are going to own and ride the motorcycle it would be in your best interest to get a Harley Service Manual, it will save you a lot of headaches in the long run.

Codes for Harley's are here: https://www.fuelmotousa.com/p-29661-...ble-codes.html

U1097 Loss of Speedometer Serial Data to ECM
U1255 Serial Data Error
U1300 Serial Data Low
U1016 Loss of ECM Serial Data

Check your battery cables & ground to ensure they are tight and not corroded.

Check all the fuses to ensure they are tight and not corroded (pull them out look at them and replace).

Check the plug connection to the ECM under the seat, be careful when plugging and plugging back in as to not bend any pin contacts.

Battery could be suspect, as stated get it load tested and go from there.

Like others have said make sure the battery is good, check voltage while starting and if it drops below 9.8V think about getting a new one.

Serial data is a LGN/V wire and goes to ECM, ICM if carbed, TSSM, Speedometer, Tach, Data link and has a few other connectors too. I'd clean and inspect them for corrosion and make sure the wires are positioned correctly in the connectors.

Load tested the battery, and the voltage didn't drop below 10.5 while starting... While removing the side cover, I noticed that one of the pos terminal connectors connecting to the battery was half severed. It was the wire that goes to some 4 way switch... Still a connection, but not much of it. Also noticed that it is absolutely filthy around the cruse control module and the fuse box... just caked on grime... I have to put way some time to just clean it all up... anyway, I cut the wire from the broken terminal connector and reconnected it to the battery. Cleared all the codes... haven't had a chance to take a ride yet, but I am hoping it was as simple as that connection. Will know more tomorrow when I take it out for a ride.

Went on a quick ride this morning, after fixing the semi broken pos terminal connector, cleaning up some of the fuse box and ecm, and clearing the codes... and so far so good. No CEL or alerts or new codes. I am hoping we identified it for now. Will keep an eye on it, especially when I go on a longer ride later this week. Appreciate everyones help so far! Seems like a great community!
