Default Smoke from starter won’t turn off

I tried to start my 2006 Softail after a hour long ride and nothing, no sound or anything but I did notice that the red key light on the gauge was blinking and dia appeared on the odometer. After trying a few times there were no lights at all so I figured the battery was dead and called a tow truck. About an hour later when the tow arrived I tried to start the bike again and it started right up but there was smoke coming from under the oil tank at or near the starter so I turned off the ignition switch but the bike continued to run. After a few turns of the ignition it finally turned off. Is it the starter or the ignition or possibly both? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

OK, first off DIAG on the Odometer looks like the trip switch is stuck, look under the center console and see if things are melted there. Second is the smoke from the starter area, could be starter, solenoid or some other wires there. You've got to look. As far as the continued running, us the run/stop switch and not the ignition switch. Likely the ignition switch is not working right. These bikes are supposed to be shut down with the run/stop switch as switching the ignition off with it running can arc inside the ignition switch.

A bad ignition switch will not cause starter run on.

The kill switch would still shut the engine off.

You don`t say if you tried using the kill switch, so we don`t have enough information....

He said that the bike continued to run not the starter. So ignition switch melted across the three terminals can cause the switch to not be effective. Start/stop switch will kill the engine, and in the case of a run-on starter caused by a stuck start switch it can and will kill the starter as well.

I apparently made the mistake of reading the title of the thread, which reads "Smoke from starter won`t turn off".
