Default Tail light variations

I'm investigating the replacement of the original rear/tail light on my '87 FXLR (Evo). Many of the replacement LED units commonly available for this style of light (used on many H-Ds) show compatibility with most bikes from 2000, but not before. However, they appear to be the same design and size of my light. Can anyone shed any light (ho, ho) on the differences between the earlier and later rear/tail lights?

I believe the later ones had a different internal design, with a plug and different base (that mounts to the rear fender), so I can imagine that the later type replacements may not simply fit straight onto the earlier base. However, I suspect that any suggested 'compatibility' means plug and play swap, whereas I'm re-wiring the back end anyway and the original base could be 'adjusted' to suit a later light unit so I'm thinking I should be able to make one of the later ones fit - depending on what the exact differences are.

Can anyone enlighten me as to how the rear/tail lights changed around the 2000 model year?

IIRC early had a separate base ( stayed on the fender) and the lens ( p/n 68033-90 ? ) could be replaced individually
Later have the bulb socket / backing plate in one piece with the lens

Yes, that's what I'm realising. However, I think the later ones do also have a base that stays on the fender, but it's a different base onto which the later lens/bulb holder assembly mounts rather than just the earlier lens.

So in theory, a later light could be used, but the later base would be required?

Would the later base fit the fender without having to modify the fender? Mine seems to have 2 fixing bolts, whereas I think I read the later ones have a single fixing. Would the fender need modifying?

Just trying to ascertain what would be required to utilise one of the later LED light units on this earlier bike.
