Distribution On most Sportster models, power from the battery positive terminal is sent to the high current terminal of the Starter/Solenoid using heavy gauge wire (for maximum power during starting) and another, lighter gauge, wire from the battery positive terminal is sent to the Main Circuit Breaker. However, for some models the wiring was slightly different. There was still a heavy gauge wire to the Starter/Solenoid terminal, but then the lighter gauge wire ran from the Starter/Solenoid terminal to feed power to the Main CB. In either case, the Main CB is (essentially) getting power directly from the battery with no other devices interrupting that flow.
I have clearly identified my Sportster as the latter wiring described, where the smaller positive wire going to main CB comes from the solenoid. My question is why. Why connect the (completely separate?) circuit to the solenoid?
Also, it means it has direct contact with the large wire which has much higher amps flowing. Why does this not overload the rest of the bike's circuit (or at least cause the CB to break)?
