Default Battery tender question

Hey everyone fairly new here and new to motorcycles. Got myself an older sportster to learn on and have also some how become a make shift mechanic(bike had some issues). When I purchased it i was told there was a battery tender to go with it. Well I just picked it up from the previous owner and am not sure how or when to use it.

I was under the ASSumption it was only needed in the winter to keep the batt conditioned. I was told that the bike should always be put on the batt tender whenever parked overnight or in the garage for a while. Is this true. When should I be using it. and are they universal between different year sportsters? I'm pretty sure I found the plug for it under the seat. Thanks in advance

I live in MN but work overseas on a rotational basis (4 weeks on/off) and plug mine in whenever I'm away and always during the winter months.

But, even when I am home and know I won't be riding for a few/several days, I plug the tender in. It doesn't charge continuously; only when the battery charge drops below a certain level. It also doesn't matter what year your bike is, they are for the battery.

Thank you I appreciate the response. I wasn't sure if it was the same adapter on each bike. Thanks again. Ride safe

Yeah, you can't overuse it. If the battery is under your seat, attach the extension to the battery so you can plug it in easily.

Unless your bike has a security system that constantly draws power from the battery, there is no need to keep the bike on a battery tender during the riding season.

I have just bought a battery tender for my '14 Tri Glide and I was pleased to see there was a lead to plug the tender into only to find the Harley socket is different from the plug on the CTEK Multi US 3300 12v charger I bought!

I have connected the CTEK lead directly to the battery and it seems to be working fine.

I thought the same thing but found out that my 6 mile ride to work was not enough to recharge the battery and after 3-4 days of short trips the bike wouldnt crank so I put mine on the tender every night.
