A Few q's after cam install

I don't mind the cost or the labor/install, it's the extra effort of the clutch pull I would like to avoid. If it's needed then no doubt I will do it.

Do you mind if I ask where you sourced most of your parts? I've been looking at the Andrews 57's, lifters, gaskets, pullers, pushrods and I'm over $700 with Amazon as my main source. Although I am considering sticking with stock push rods just to avoid dollars and complications with adjusting.

Can't use stock pushrods as base circle of 57 cam is .020 smaller which means you need a longer pushrod.

Andrews 57 @ directcycleparts.com - $224
Compcam 850-1 lifters @ jegs - $68
Fuelmoto gasket kit - $60
Rent the puller and installer
Koyo B-168 bearings @ Georges garage - $18
SE tapered adjustable PRs @ HD online store $143

Well that sucks about the push rods, I was really planning on using the stocks. I bought the HD top end kit with all the gaskets thinking I would go stock.

Hi,

Look on ebay for SE perfect fit rods, most come from stage4 kit and are the right size for cam,

If you got low mileage bike most your gaskets and seals wiil be fine to reuse, definitely cam cover gasket, tappet cover seals might be stuffed though, i would pull apart, check it all out and confirm what you need then buy

And just buy individual parts

Dont listen to all the hype on lifters, you would think there be massive lines at shops with people getting there lifters changed or bike fixed, check them for wear and go from there, people would have you changing every part on bike cause harley made it, must be crap

Thanks for the tip, I found the S&S Quickee's pretty reasonably priced. I'll now return the gasket kit since I'll only need half of them if not taking apart rocker and tank. I still plan to replace the lifters, mostly due to the increase between cams not because I think the Harley ones are bad. I can't see there being too much wear on anything since the bike will have around 5000 miles when I do the swap

if you've never seen what happens when a lifter fails, you can't appreciate how crappy they really are. The issue is not the lifter body per say as much as it is the rollers/pins themselves. I believe the transition from the HD "B" to "C" lifters began in early 2010 or late 2009 and by midstream 2010 even the lifters marked as "B" were made in Mexico just as the "C" lifter is now.

robbyville, what gasket kit is it sir as I might be interested in taking the full kit off your hands.

To do a cam job correctly IMO with adjustables you need 3 orings for inside cam chest, bearings, cam cover gasket, exhaust port gaskets, lifters (these are pretty much considered a maintenance item these days), and possibly a shim kit from HD for the rear cam. All the cam jobs I've done, I think I may have used 1 shim during that time. If you want to chance re-using old gaskets that's your choice, just remember how much of a pain in the azz it is to take that exhaust off if you have a cam cover gasket that leaks or an exhaust port gasket leaks after you get it all back together. Ounce of prevention, I say.

I'll let you know tomorrow, it was referred to as a top end kit. To be fair I'm sure I can simply return it for a full refund, retail was $87 I think. It does include every o ring, etc.

I did buy the cam spacer kit just in case I needed it, and frankly I fully expect for the 6 bucks to replace lift cover gaskets, head gaskets, etc. I will be replacing the lifters as well so I can either keep the kit which came with rocker gaskets and such or buy everything individually.

The goal for me is to have a fun learning experience and improve performance at the same time.

By the way, love The sig, my wife spent most of her life in NO and is a diehard Saints fan, so by proxy the rest of us are too. Supported the team through thick and thin!

No worries sir. Have fun and you will enjoy/learn about your bike. They're a blast to work on and more so after its done and you're riding around and you remember that you did "that" :-)
